LinuxPPC announces beta test version of ATI Rage128 video card drivers

August 18, 1999 -- Madison, Wisc. -- LinuxPPC Inc., developers of the
Linux operating system for PowerPC computers, has announced the
availability of drivers for the ATI Rage 128 video card. The Rage 128 is
the video card that ships in every Apple Power Macintosh G3 computer.
Prior to the release of this driver, there was no native driver for the
Rage 128.

A pre-compiled Linux kernel (version 2.1.22) with the driver built in is
available from developer Anthony Tong's web site,
. For users who are able to
compile their own kernels, patches are also available from the site.

To install the new kernel, Blue G3 users should download the vmlinux.gz
file from Anthony Tong's web site, and decompress it with the MacGzip
program. MacGzip is on the LinuxPPC 1999 CD-ROM, and on the LinuxPPC FTP
server,
.

Next, the decompressed vmlinux file should be placed in the Linux Kernels
folder, which is located inside the Macintosh System Folder. Users with
older version of BootX may not have a Linux Kernels folder, and should
simply place the vmlinux file in the System Folder.
