Another week has passed busily with lots of things happening in the Midgard world. As Midgard's documentation projects gain speed, the Open Source Writer's Group has also started running news on our efforts on that area. OSWG is a collaboration group for people working on documentation for Open Source projects. And now to this week's news: ============================ ============================ On Midgard's documentation Last week we spoke about the state of Midgard's documentation. A lot has happened since. We decided to combine the separate documentation efforts into one bigger project, the Midgard Manual. The manual would be a complete guide to Midgard starting from acquiring Midgard, and going through topics like Midgard usage and administration to Midgard's function reference. We'll also try to get included a summary for decision makers on the whys and hows of implementing Midgard solutions in businesses. It would be nice to have a semi-suit to write this, Midgard developers can provide the background information and cases as needed. To make this new documentation plan work better we try to move the documentation projects to a common platform. The idea is to use the DocBook SGML tools for writing the documents and Midgard's CVS repository for storing them. If you are interested in participating in the project, please contact the Midgard mailing list. To learn more on our new documentation plans, the thread from Midgard's list can be found from the archives. -> http://www.progressive-comp.com/Lists/?t=93498315900008&w=2&d=1&r=1 ---------------------------- The schedule for Midgard 1.2 Unless some surprises appear, the next stable release of Midgard, 1.2, is now ready and available in the CVS repository. The reason why it hasn't been released yet is because Jukka is now in training, and so will be mostly offline until Friday, and so testing the release is not yet finished. People interested in testing it can do so by using the anonymous CVS. As the database upgrading script will be written only during the final testing, it is not yet there and there will probably be some problems. The new features of Midgard 1.2 include: -Database connectivity via ODBC (only MySQL for now) -improved access control -document handling (checkin/out, locking) -user preferences -patched PHP 3.0.12 We look forward to releasing 1.2 on Friday the 20th, before that it should be treated as beta. The instructions for using the anonymous CVS are in Midgard's developer site. -> http://www.midgard-project.org/article/1000.html ---------------------------- Midgard Workshop Michael Ed suggested on the Midgard mailing list that we should hold a workshop for Midgard users and developers in Finland. Jukka and I liked the idea, and are now starting to work on the arrangements. It should be held sometime in mid-October in Helsinki, preferably so that it would coincide with the Linux@Work conference there. The workshop will include tutorials and lectures about using and developing Midgard, and will be free. Stonesoft Corp. and Takomo Oy will provide us the needed facilities so that won't be a problem. More information (like the exact date) should become available during next week. Please contact me (Henri.Bergius@iki.fi) for more information. There was some discussion on it in the mailing list: -> http://www.progressive-comp.com/Lists/?t=93445134100002&w=2&d=1&r=1 ============================ ============================ About Midgard Midgard is a freely-available Web application development and publishing platform based on the popular PHP scripting language.
