The new release contains Midgard core libraries, a PHP3-based web application server for the Apache platform and the needed web-based administration tools. THIS RELEASE The 1.2 "Mad King" release of Midgard contains usability enhancements and new features. A number of misfeatures and bugs have also been fixed since the 1.1 series. This release does not contain the ODBC support that was originally planned. The way Midgard currently uses the query results is quite inefficient with ODBC but very fast with native MySQL. That's why the ODBC support was branced to the development series 1.3 "Broken Shinai" of Midgard. These two series will evolve together until the ODBC support becomes mature and fast enough to be used in the public releases. The "Mad King" release continues to improve the system from the original "Land Rover" release, but there's still things to be done. The documentation project is slowly gaining speed but there is still much documentation missing. The following things have changed after the "Iron River" series: - User preferences are now supported - Many parts of the Admin site have been improved - Article locking now possible to prevent unauthorized changes - Access control has been improved and the framework for adding new controls in future is now in place - It is now possible to set the database name, username and password for the Midgard database connection in the Apache configuration file - Authentication is now required from all PUT uploads - PHP 3.0.12 is now used as the basis for the midgard-php package. Patches for other versions of PHP available upon request. - Compatibility with Apache 1.3.9 confirmed Because of lacking documentation, all new users of Midgard are encouraged to subscribe the Midgard mailing list at midgard@@greywolves.org for installation and usage support. The Midgard Project would also like to invite all interested persons and organizations to take part in the development process. The Midgard Project is a challenging one with lots of promise and will surely be rewarding to all who participate. ABOUT MIDGARD Midgard is freely-available platform for creating powerful web applications. It is fully based on Open Source software, giving you freedom to create your solutions in an open environment. Midgard is the tool for creating, modifying and maintaining dynamic database-enabled web services. Midgard already has a quite good set of features for creating powerful web sites, and is being used with successful results by some commercial and un-commercial organizations. But this is not where the development will end; rather, the development team also has more ambitious goals about revolutionizing the way people think about web development. LICENSING ISSUES The Midgard core libraries are distributed under the GNU Library General Public License, a license which permits the software to be freely used so long as it is dynamically linked or the user can relink it to new versions of the libraries. This is the same license used by, for example, the Linux C libraries. Because of this licensing scheme, Midgard can be considered to be free software developed with an Open Source model. The Midgard-based administration tools and usage examples in the Midgard packages are distributed under the X Consortium license, which doesn't impose any conditions on modification or redistribution of source code or binaries other than requiring that copyright/license notices are left intact. THE MIDGARD PROJECT The Midgard Project is a volunteer group that manages the core Midgard distribution and helps to coordinate and help development projects based on the Midgard system. The membership of The Midgard Project is open for anyone interested in working on the Midgard system.
