HTML version: http://developer.gnome.org/news/summary/1999_August22-August30.html ============================================================= Table of Contents ------------------------------------------------------------- 1) news.gnome.org for this week 2) gnome-libs status 3) Bug Report Number 2000 4) Bug statuses 5) Icons! 6) GTK+/Gnome Application Development ships 7) Vintage Rubber Gnome Squeeze Toy 8) Hacking Activity 9) New and Updated Software ============================================================== 1) news.gnome.org for this week -------------------------------------------------------------- Our news site: http://news.gnome.org went live early this week, and there's a lot of interesting stuff on there. So I'll try not to rehash too much of it in this summary. Items on the page include Personalizable Toolbar Library, Translating the User Guide, New Glademm release, GGV release, GNOME Print release, gnome-libs release, gnome-libs status updates, gphoto and libxml releases. ============================================================== 2) gnome-libs status -------------------------------------------------------------- On the news site, be sure to check out: http://news.gnome.org/gnome-news/935902117/index_html Which is a status report for gnome-libs 2.0. It also includes some stuff I wrote about my "GConf" configuration system. If you hate the registry, now's your chance to help with its replacement; patches now, or no whining later. :-) Check 'gconf' out of GNOME CVS. In the comments section of this status report, Mark Crichton added a status report on gdk-pixbuf (Imlib replacement), which is also worth checking out. ============================================================== 3) Bug Report Number 2000 -------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent Renardias (vincent@debian.org) writes: we got the #2000th bug report on Wed, 25 Aug 1999 08:43:54, and it was in fact a congratulation message from Glen A Miner <gaminer@ubisoft.qc.ca>: To: submit@bugs.gnome.org Subject: You people rock! Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 08:43:54 -0400 Kudos on an amazingly well done job! peace http://bugs.gnome.org/db/20/2000.html ============================================================== 4) Bug statuses -------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent also wrote in with some bug database statistics: Top 20 most buggy GNOME packages: Rank Num Grav Norm Wish Oldest Package Name ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ------ --------------------------------- 630 55 471 104 203 Complete Distribution ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ------ --------------------------------- 1 91 5 75 11 203 mc 2 68 1 60 7 185 gtk+ 3 61 14 17 30 186 gnome-core 4 41 31 10 187 gnome-applets 5 33 1 20 12 188 panel 6 31 29 2 181 enlightenment 7 29 27 2 202 balsa 8 25 23 2 188 gnome-pim 9 23 3 16 4 195 control-center 10 22 12 4 6 194 gnome-libs 11 22 3 10 9 198 gnome-terminal 12 21 21 51 gphoto 13 18 6 8 4 202 gnome-media 14 17 1 15 1 203 gnumeric 15 15 15 189 imlib 16 11 2 8 1 169 gdm 17 9 9 201 gnome-games 18 7 7 149 gtk-engines 19 6 5 1 126 gnome-utils 20 5 3 2 192 bugs.gnome.org NB: an hourly updated list is available on http://bugs.gnome.org/~vincent/report-bybugnum.txt ============================================================== 5) Icons! -------------------------------------------------------------- Matthias Warkus is really serious about completing the GNOME icon set. Here's a status report: http://www.gnome.org/mailing-lists/archives/gnome-list/1999-August/1346.shtml ============================================================== 6) GTK+/Gnome Application Development ships -------------------------------------------------------------- My book is now shipping, and should be available in stores (online and otherwise). Here's the info page: http://pobox.com/~hp/gnome-app-devel.html Also, the book is in GNOME CVS under the "GGAD" module for your book-hacking pleasure. This is a fairly comprehensive and detailed GNOME programming manual; if you've been upset about the lack of GTK+/Gnome documentation, check it out. ============================================================== 7) Vintage Rubber Gnome Squeeze Toy -------------------------------------------------------------- On the Amazon.com page for my book, Amazon was advertising a Vintage Rubber Gnome Squeeze Toy from Amazon Auctions. Of course someone (who hasn't confessed yet) bought it and sent it to me at RHAD Labs. :-) Dr Mike is home with his new baby and the keys to the digital camera drawer, so no photos of the GNOME yet. But we'll have them. The Vintage Rubber Gnome makes a _really loud_ and thoroughly unpleasant noise when you squeeze it. It's amazing. They don't make them like this anymore, guys. :-) Anyway, thanks to whoever sent the Gnome. It rules. ============================================================== 8) Hacking Activity -------------------------------------------------------------- Module Score-O-Matic: 60 gnome-libs 58 gimp 29 gphoto 28 gnome-core 27 gnome-applets 27 gconf 25 gnumeric 24 gnome-vfs 23 web-devel-2 21 gtk-- 21 gnerudite 18 gnome-chess 18 dryad 16 gtk+ 16 GGAD 15 ggv 13 control-center User Score-O-Matic: 59 hp 43 ke 36 kmaraas 34 unammx 33 campd 31 tgil 28 jirka 19 yosh 17 mmeeks 16 jpr 16 ettore 16 bpaauwe 14 pablo 12 tml 12 mawarkus 11 sopwith 11 kenelson 10 justin 10 glaurent ============================================================== 9) New and Updated Software -------------------------------------------------------------- Gnomba: Samba browser CDE: source code editor Gnome Toaster: CD burner gproc: process list irssi: IRC client that works with the panel Gone: news reader Xsitecopy: sync files glms: monitors CPU fan, temperature, etc. GSnes9x: Nintendo emulator Gnome Software Map Browser: browse this list of software gaddr: simple address book X-Chat: the canonical GNOME IRC client wmG: window manager with GTK folded in libptb: user-customizable toolbars Giram: 3D modeller alarm applet: reminds you about things gMoonClock: phases of the moon in your panel GnomePM: Portfolio manager wxWindows: Cross-platform toolkit with a GTK+ port Gnerudite: Scrabble clone Pybliographer: Bibliography database java-gnome: Java bindings Gnonews: newsreader libglade: Load Glade-generated interfaces at runtime GMasqDialer: masqdialer server gwsearch: search engine frontend GNetTool: libnids wrapper gtop: graphical "top" G-Typo: typing tutor game gtkdiff: diff frontend See the software map on www.gnome.org (or Freshmeat) for more information about any of these packages. =========================================================================== Until next week - Havoc
