I'm writing this during another very busy week. Jukka has now moved into teleworking, and so things are quite chaotic in the office. But even with that, things are progressing in a very nice pace. The plans for the next version of Midgard are now solidifying, and some of the code is already in place. We've also got some interesting contacts over possible future features for Midgard and hopefully we hear more about them later on. People are still having lots of problems with Midgard installations, but otherwise things are looking very good. However, having more volunteers packaging Midgard for various platforms could help. But now to the actual headlines: ============================ ---------------------------- Current versions: Stable: 1.2.3 (Mad King) Devel.: 1.3 ---------------------------- ============================ The Road to Midgard 2.0 Jukka has written about our plans for the forthcoming 2.0 release. The document lists the components of the new library architecture and tells about their current state. The plan to change the version number for the release from 1.4 to 2.0 was caused by the fact that the version will be an almost complete rewrite of the Midgard system and that should be reflected in the version numbering. You can find the email from Midgard's mailing list archives: -> http://www.progressive-comp.com/Lists/?l=midgard&m=93898277509113&w=2 ---------------------------- DevShed interview on Midgard The Developer Shed has a nice interview with Henri Bergius, Emiliano Heyns and Jukka Zitting of The Midgard Project. Topics discussed include DAV, Zope, Midgard 2.0 and our release naming conventions. There is also a talkback area available on the site. -> http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/PHP/Midgard/ ---------------------------- Planning the DAV implementation Emile has written some notes on a possible way of implementing the DAV (Distributed Authoring and Versioning) specification in Midgard. "This will move to the midgard site soon, but this is pretty incoherent at the moment; I wouldn't want to have the world think the Midgard team is a disorganized bunch of loonies (even if I may be :). This is an early draft. I really need all the input I can get on this, and if you feel like a little (OK, a lot probably) of midnight hacking, I'm soon going to have all the coding work you can handle, and then some. :)" The DAV system sounds very interesting, and it would be a nice thing to have a solid implementation of it in Midgard. Go check the document out! -> http://www.iris-advies.com/php/Emile.Heyns/mgddav.html ---------------------------- Workshop updates The first Midgard Workshop will be held on Wednesday 13th of October in Helsinki, Finland. It is to be expected that it will slightly disrupt the release of next MWS. The event is now full, and we won't be taking any further registrations, except in the possibility of someone canceling their participation. We're currently hacking presentations for the event with MagicPoint, a nice open source presentation tool for Linux. With it, the slides are created using simple ASCII formatting rules, and so we can distribute the work with our CVS repository. The slides will be made available on Midgard's site after the event and have been designed generic enough to be usable also on other occasions. For reference, the schedule of the event can be found from Midgard's site: -> http://www.midgard-project.org/article/1211.html ============================ ============================ About Midgard Midgard is a freely-available Web application development and publishing platform based on the popular PHP scripting language.
