From: Lyle BallSubject: Lineo Announces Internet Set-top for Latin America Date: Mon, 18 Oct 1999 16:15:00 Organization: Lineo, Inc To: lwn@lwn.net LATIN AMERICA TARGETED WITH LOW-COST INTERNET ACCESS DEVICE FOR THE HOME Multicode's iMigo to be Based on Lineo Embrowser and DR DOS Lindon, UT - Oct. 18, 1999 - Lineo=99, Inc. today announced that Embrowser=99= , Lineo's embedded micro Web browser, and DR DOS=AE, one of Lineo's embedded operating system platforms, have been selected for Multicode's iMigo=99, a Latin American-bound Internet set-top device that provides low-cost browsing and e-mail over televisions. Lineo's embedded browser and embedded= OS provide Multicode with a software solution that is easy to customize and far less expensive than alternative solutions. End users of Multicode's= iMigo will be able to connect their homes to the Internet for a fraction of the cost of a full desktop system, allowing a much larger number of Latin Americans to benefit from the information and communication vehicles on the Internet. "Devices that provide home users with access to the Internet do not have to be expensive," said Bryan Sparks, CEO of Lineo, Inc. "Multicode's iMigo will provide households that currently don't have home computers with the freedom to communicate and research via the Internet. Those households with computers can inexpensively add a second device, using their PCs for applications while using their TVs for e-mail and Internet browsing." Multicode's vice president of marketing and sales, Santiago Cuellar, added, "The Lineo Embrowser software and business model allow Multicode to own and design the interface and initial content viewed by customers of our devices, which target Latin America. Latin Americans will turn on the iMigo and see what they want to see, in their language and styled after their cultural preferences." Embrowser is currently based on DR DOS and leverages the broad set of existing drivers, development tools and engineering knowledge base associat= ed with DOS. The current DR DOS version is easy to customize and maintains the well established stability of DOS. A port of Embrowser for Embedix, Lineo's embedded Linux platform, will ship during Q1 2000. Multicode plans to migrate iMigo to an Embedix technology base as soon as it is available. Availability and Pricing Multicode's iMigo is scheduled to begin shipping as early as January 2000. The base price of the iMigo to ISPs will be US$199. Multicode's business models calls for ISPs to resell the product for US$120, subsidizin= g the difference with ongoing ISP connection contracts. Multicode's iMigo will be available in both Spanish and English. Lineo=99, Inc.
