Greetings!

I'm now back from the US so we can try to
catch up with what has happened since the
last MWS. There is very good stuff going
on in both the Midgard mailing list and
in private discussions. It is nice to see
so many people interested in using and
working on the system.

Midgard 1.2.4 released

Jukka released the latest stable version of
Midgard on October 26th. Here is the release
announcement:

Midgard 1.2.4 adds support for multiple Midgard
databases in a single Apache server. Support for
URL address space management was extended and
better defaults for configuration directives was
added. Some access control bugs were fixed in
the Midgard library.

Changes in this release:

- Now supports multiple Midgard databases
- MidgardDatabase can now be used many times
- MidgardUsername and MidgardPassword now only
  set the defaults
- You can use extra arguments to MidgardDatabase
to set the username and password
- MidgardEngine now works inside VirtualHosts and
  even Locations
- MidgardRootfile now defaults to
  libexec/midgard-root.php3
- Structure of log messages is now clearer.
- Bug fixes in access control. Group membership is
  now handled better.

The semantics of the Midgard configuration
directives have changed a bit so it is advised
that the mod_midgard documentation (INSTALL and
midgard.conf files) are checked before upgrading
from an earlier version. The changes are only minimal
and should cause no problems.

The release is available as both source and RPM
formats from Midgard's Web site:

Russian version of Midgard

Alexander Bokovoy has announced that there is
now a version of Midgard in Russian language.

This version includes a translated Admin site
and some modifications to the Midgard 1.2.3
sources to allow the use of Russian code pages.

The Russian Midgard 1.2.3 should be available
soon and according to Jukka the modifications
will probably also be included into future
Midgard releases.

After the announcement of Russian Midgard we've
received some offers to translate Midgard to
various other languages, and hopefully this will
be the beginning of the actual work on adding
the needed i18n and l10n features into Midgard.
If there is interest in working on this, let us
know!

Midgard Workshop #2

The next Midgard Workshop will be held during
January 2000 in Karlskrona, Sweden.

Michael Ed (michael@marlowes.com) has offered
to arrange the next training event for Midgard.
The event will probably take place in January
22nd-23rd, and will concentrate mostly on
development labs, but we will also speak about
Midgard's future there.

I'll post more on this when the details are
clearer. Before that, Michael can be contacted
for further information.

Improved host configuration

Emile has informed us of a very interesting
way of configuring Apache VirtualHosts. This
would enable Midgard administrators to add
new hosts dynamically from the Admin site
without needing to change the actual Apache
configuration files.

You can learn how to do it from Emile's
email to the Midgard mailing list:
