SGI's efforts at contributing to Linux are, simply put, going to be huge in at least three areas: OpenGL, where they are working with various vendors of X servers and graphics cards and working on high performance OpenGL for Linux; security, where they are doing an OpenBSD style code review and contributing software to bring Linux to C2 and B1 grades in the future (DoD scales); and the third item we heard about in Dayton, OH, was their clustering technology, bringing Beowulf up to commercial levels for management and scalability. they've already comitted to releasing a lot of source, including kernel patches and applications (ie the kernel crash debugger), and making some very nice, Linux friendly hardware (ie the 1400L, the 1200L, and so on). this is really exciting for everyone, i think, and we all stand to benefit from SGI's research in software and hardware and really get this pushed forward. the talks, some of which didn't travel to Dayton, are archived online at http://www.sgilinux.org/ . needless to say, if the readers can get there, do so! SGI, known traditionally for being closed source and not friendly to compiling open source software, is really making a big effort, and it's going to be huge! thanks again for everything, jose nazario jose@biocserver.cwru.edu
