Date: Wed, 24 Nov 1999 12:15:41 -0500 (EST) From: Havoc Pennington <hp@redhat.com> To: gnome-announce-list@gnome.org, gnome-list@gnome.org Subject: GNOME Summary Nov. 17-23 (XFCE compat, new GnomePixmap, TODO list, This is the GNOME Summary for November 17-23, 1999. ============================================================= Table of Contents ------------------------------------------------------------- 1) XFCE interoperability 2) send TODO items to Elliot 3) article shows off libglade/Python 4) new GnomePixmap screenshots 5) new gEdit 6) GTK+ 1.4 drawing enhancements 7) Hacking Activity 8) New and Updated Software ============================================================== 1) XFCE interoperability -------------------------------------------------------------- Apparently XFCE has new features to interoperate nicely with GNOME. Basically this means that you can now choose either the GNOME user environment (gmc, panel, etc.) or the XFCE user environment to go with your applications built with the GNOME development framework. http://news.gnome.org/gnome-news/943005993/index_html I'm excited to see progress in this area; interoperability means more user choice and better, more modular software. Remember that in the free software world, more users means more developers. Monolithic software (like the original Netscape codebase) falls flat on its face in part because its components are only of interest to one application. There's an article about it on Advogato: http://www.advogato.org/article/14.html ============================================================== 2) send TODO items to Elliot -------------------------------------------------------------- Elliot is compiling a list of TODO items that we'd like to have volunteers to work on. Mail ideas to sopwith@redhat.com. ============================================================== 3) article shows off libglade/Python -------------------------------------------------------------- Reduce an 87-line program to 26 with libglade! http://www.baypiggies.org/10mintig.html ============================================================== 4) new GnomePixmap screenshots -------------------------------------------------------------- In the development branch of gnome-libs we've been fooling with alpha transparency and the gdk-pixbuf merge. The GnomePixmap widget has changed a lot: http://news.gnome.org/gnome-news/942954792/index_html ============================================================== 5) new gEdit -------------------------------------------------------------- A new gEdit is out: http://news.gnome.org/gnome-news/942966654/index_html ============================================================== 6) GTK+ 1.4 drawing enhancements -------------------------------------------------------------- Lots of hacking on GTK+ proper lately; Owen has a master plan to fix flicker during opaque resize and other multiple-redraw situations. You can read about this here: http://www.gnome.org/mailing-lists/archives/gtk-devel-list/1999-November/0073.shtml This morning Owen's been working on replacing the pixmap theme engine with a faster one based on gdk-pixbuf. This will be another GTK+ 1.4 feature. ============================================================== 7) Hacking Activity -------------------------------------------------------------- Module Score-O-Matic: (number of CVS commits per module, during this week) 62 gnumeric 40 gimp 32 gphotoweb 30 entity 25 gphoto 18 balsa 17 gnome-core 16 gw-web 15 gnome-libs 13 gee 12 libgtop 12 gtk-- 12 gnome-docu 12 gconf 11 evolution 10 gnome-applets "gee" is new, it's an equation editor George is writing.
