As the work on Midgard 2 gathers speed, we'll mostly focus on announcing things in the development end this week. With all the projects going on around Midgard, I'm sure the weeks before the version 2 hits beta will be quite hectic. However, I'll try to keep up with the these summaries. ============================ ---------------------------- Current versions: Stable: 1.2.5 (Mad King) Devel.: 1.3 ---------------------------- ============================ Midgard developer meeting IRC log The first Midgard developer meeting over IRC took place on November 25th. There were about twelve attendees overall. The discussion was mostly about the architectural changes in Midgard 2, and some of the development projects including customizable records, access control, DAV and database independence. You can find the raw IRC log from Midgard's site: -> http://www.midgard-project.org/article/1373.html ---------------------------- Forthcoming Midgard 2 alpha Jukka has promised to put together a compilable version of the Midgard 2 code tree within next week or so. This version will then be released as a minimal alpha release. It will not yet be stable or featured enough for running any sites on, but should provide people developing it a better basis to work on. The actual beta release will hopefully take place sometime during this month, so if you are not intending to work with the Midgard sources, you probably won't need the alpha version. ---------------------------- Symlinks in content management There have been many development and research projects going on with Midgard lately. Talk has mostly been about some new features for the Midgard 2 architecture, localization and packaging Midgard to new platforms. One of the new features that has been discussed quite much lately is the planned ability for adding symlinks into Midgard's content trees. This feature is something that many people managing large content structures have been requesting for some time. So far only way to achieve this capability has been by handling it in the PHP end. Emile is now planning a native Midgard solution to the problem. There is some discussion on the best way to implement it on Midgard's mailing list: -> http://www.progressive-comp.com/Lists/?t=94379435600001&w=2&r=1 ---------------------------- Midgard server downtime We will take Midgard's Web and mail server down for maintenance on either December 7th or 8th. The downtime shouldn't be longer than some hours, but as we plan to upgrade both the operating system and hardware, it might be a bit longer. After the upgrade we will have 13GB of disk space available instead of the 1.5GB we have now, so then we won't have so many problems with large binary packages on the server any more. Alas, this will also mean switching from SCSI to IDE, but hopefully the performance won't decrease too much. We are also planning some major additions to the Midgard Web site, but those will probably wait until the Midgard 2 release is finished. ============================ ============================ About Midgard Midgard is a freely-available Web application development and publishing platform based on the popular PHP scripting language.
