Subject: Various LinuxPPC notes

Linux/PPC developer Kevin Hendricks has just posted the latest version of
Ryuichi Oikawa's Xpmac Xserver which is accelerated for Rage128 and
Mach64. The Mac64 chips are used in older Apple hardware. The Blue G3 and
Power Mac G4 use the Rage128 chipset. This version also has support for
USB mice as well as ADB mice.

Kevin writes: "This is a bugfix release. Problems drawing lines (ie.. the
tick marks on xclock) have been worked around. Please give it a try and
let me know if you run into problems (after making sure you have tried
everything in the ReadThisFirst.txt file!).

Developer Benjamin Herrenschmidt has uploaded a new test version of the
BootX software, which many Linux/PowerMac users use to boot from the Mac
OS into Linux.

This new version should fix the various IDE hang issues with a previous
version of BootX, and should help people having problems using BootX with
Apple's MacOS 9.0.

Ben writes:

"I've uploaded a new test version of BootX (1.2b3) at
http://calvaweb.calvacom.fr/bh40/test.html

"Please report me any problem with this version ASAP.

"It should (I hope) fix the various IDE hang issues with b2 and the MacOS
9.0 IDE problem. Some users are still experiencing some SCSI problems with
MacOS 9.0 drivers, especially on Lombard laptops, I suggest those users
try the "force SCSI ON" option in BootX and report me the result.

"I've also tried a fix for the "sound hardware disabled by MacOS" issue on
B&W G3s & iMacs that was fixed with 1.1.3 but came back with MacOS 9.0. I
couldn't test it on one of those machines, so please tell me if it works."

Lastly, Ani Joshi has apparently gotten a SoundBlaster 128 card to work
under LinuxPPC. He writes:

"i was messing around with my PC's sound blaster 128 card in my mac the
other day and after a couple hours of hacking i got it to work pretty
decently. so for any other hardware junkies out there i have put up a
kernel at:

ftp://devel.linuxppc.org/users/ajoshi/vmlinux-es1370.bz2

es1370 is the driver for SoundBlaster128 cards (Ensoniq based)"
