Subject: Call for Peer Reviewers and Spec Writers

Greetings from sourceXchange!

Things have been going very well over the last month - a total of 31
proposals have been submitted against the 8 open projects, and we're
ready to move several of those projects into active development.

As some of you know, we have a role in our process called a "Peer
Reviewer". This role is critical - it helps ensure that the process
is fair to both sponsor and developer, and also can help ensure that
what gets built is consistant with what the Open Source community
needs. We have also defined a new role: the "Spec Writer".
In this role, you can help sponsors turn their high-level objectives
into actual "Request For Proposals" for the sourceXchange site.

Both of these roles are paid roles - as a Spec Writer there is
typically a flat fee for the authoring of an RFP given to the first
person who satisfies the sponsor's needs; as a Peer Reviewer, you are
paid an additional 10% of the amount paid by sponsors to developers;
so on a $20K project, the Peer Reviewer fee would be an additional
$2000. At a future point this will be negotiable on a project by
project basis; we've set it at 10% for now based on our rough
reckoning that a Peer Reviewer will typically spend about 10% as much
time on the project as the developer themselves.

Aside from the compensation, this is a great way to be able to
influence the direction of funded Open Source software development,
even if you don't have enough time to do all the development yourself.
This is also a good way to build up your reputation on the
sourceXchange site and the wider Open Source community.

Both of these roles require us to provide some degree of pre-validation -
simply a check that the developer in these roles has some experience with
Open Source software development. The developer doesn't need to have been
working on the Linux kernel since 1991, or HTTP since 1989 - just long
enough to probably know what they're doing when it comes to writing
software and working with this community.

If you are interested in being a Peer Reviewer or Spec Writer, send us an
email at peerreviewer@sourcexchange.com or specwriter@sourcexchange.com,
respectively. One can certainly apply to be both a Peer Reviewer and Spec
Writer. In your email include your sourceXchange site login, and any
additional information about your interests, background, Open Source
projects you've worked on, etc. Better yet, make sure your profile on the
sourceXchange site has all that information - we'll be checking it out
anyways. Also, make sure that you've signed the developer agreement, as
it's necessary to be an Active Developer.

The first 200 people to register and be named as a Peer Reviewer or
Spec Writer will get a free sourceXchange t-shirt, and everyone who
does this by January 10th will also be entered in a drawing to win a
Palm VII. Woooo!

Let us know if you're interested. If you think you know of someone
else who might be interested, let us know or pass this email along to
them. Again, the email addresses are:

  peerreviewer@sourcexchange.com

and

  specwriter@sourcexchange.com
