LINUX CERTIFICATION GROUP DELIVERS FIRST EXAMS

Linux Professional Institute test now available at 1,732 locations
worldwide

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 11, 2000

TORONTO, Canada: The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) today announced
the immediate availability of the first exam in its Linux certification
program. The exam, which covers Linux basics as part of the program's
first level, is now available worldwide at testing centers affiliated with
Virtual University Enterprises (VUE).

"This is what we've been working towards since the day we started," said
LPI Executive Director Evan Leibovitch. "We've had a community of
thousands helping with the program so far, and now the greater community
can see how well this model can work. We've tried to make our program
challenging, vendor-neutral and accessible, and I believe we've succeeded
on all fronts."

The first exam, test "1a", tests knowledge and skills necessary to perform
basic Linux system administration. It takes roughly one and a half hours
to complete and costs $100 at VUE testing centers anywhere in the world.
Students can register for LPI exams through VUE's web site, or by directly
contacting their local VUE testing center. The VUE network currently
encompasses 1,732 centers worldwide, of which 1,464 are open to the
public.

"Our objective for the first level is to validate that someone can perform
the tasks of a entry-level system administrator," said Director of
Exam Development Scott Murray. "We want an exam that is challenging, one
that serves the basic purpose of separating those who understand the
fundamentals from those who don't. We want to provide a certification that
is supported and respected by its community."

Murray also praised the efforts of volunteers who assisted LPI in
producing its first exam, including more than 90 who contributed questions
and participated in the exam review. "Our volunteers are a crucial part of
LPI," he said, "and the delivery of quality exams reflects the hard work
and care they have contributed to the program."

"Still, we must remember that this is only the first step," Leibovitch
said. "We have other exams to develop and we are always looking for more
people willing to be a part a project which is a very significant part of
bringing Linux into the computing mainstream."

Test 1a is the first of three exams that candidates must pass in order to
attain the LPI's first level of certification. The other exams are
currently under development and expected to be deployed through the first
half of 2000.
