To: midgard@greywolves.org, lwn@lwn.net, marty@linuxtoday.com,

Greetings!

First of all, I'm sorry about missing last
week's MWS. I had already all the material
collected, but then got caught up with work
matters so I didn't have time to send it
out. Because of that, we have quite many
things to mention this week.

============================
----------------------------

Current versions:
	Stable: 1.2.5 (Mad King)
	Devel.: 1.2.6 prerelease

----------------------------
============================

Midgard 1.2.6 progress

Work on the next Midgard 1.2.x series release,
version 1.2.6 has continued steadily. It seems
that this release will introduce some very
important Midgard 2 features back to the older
Midgard branch as well as make many usability
improvements to the administration interface.

Alexander Bokovoy is managing the development
of this release. He is also making prereleases
available on his site as the work progresses.
Currently it is expected that the release
would be feature-complete within two weeks
when Alexander gets his new XML-based
replication utility Repligard integrated to
the system.

If you are interested in helping out with
testing or development of this release, you
can find the sources from Alexander's site.

Access Control in Midgard

There seems to be quite much interest in how
the access control features of Midgard work
in the current stable and the 2.x branches,
and what difference there is with these two
implementations.

As a followup to a thread on security in
Midgard, there is my reply on the current
access control options and Emile's write-up
on the Midgard 2 ACLs available from Midgard's
mailing list archives.

Updates on Midgard packages

As there seems to be increasing interest for
Midgard from SuSE Linux users, Malte Knoerr
(malte@knoerr.escape.de) has now announced
that he will be packaging Midgard for that
platform. He hasn't yet announced any dates,
but will try to get the packages available
ASAP.

Also, there was an issue raised with Emile's
Midgard Monster packages (a combination of
Apache, Midgard and mod_ssl). The package
contains encryption software that is illegal
to use within the United States due to patent
concerns.

To fix this problem, Emile has now uploaded
a source RPM that allows the package to be
built against the RSAREF library. Instructions
for this are available from Midgard's download
site. Now, if a Midgard user living within the
US could make some binaries from this package,
I'm sure things would be easier for Web
developers living there.

Midgard Hints & Tips updated

David Guerizec has now updated his 'Midgard
Hints & Tips' column on Midgard's Web site.
The new article provides instructions on how
to share code between different Midgard hosts
in an easy manner.

As a reminder, David is always looking for
useful code snippets to add there, so if you
have any available, be sure to contact him.

SSLUG looking for speakers

Kristian Vilmann from the Skåne Sjælland
Linux User Group wrote in about the
LinuxForum 2000 conference which they are
arranging together with the Danish UNIX
User Group.

One of the topics they are planning to
cover this year is databases and Web, and
they would like to include a Midgard
presentation.

Everybody interested in giving a talk on
the subject in either Danish, Swedish or
English should contact him directly.

Midgard and Oracle update

We mentioned a project on porting the
database interface in Midgard 1.2.x
to support Oracle 8 databases month ago.

Now there is some information available
on how things are proceeding in that end.
It seems that there are still some
unresolved issues left, but they expect
to be able to make the release sometime
around February 15th.

You can find Jean-Pierre Arneodo's update
on the matter from Midgard's mailing
list archives.
