To: midgard@greywolves.org, lwn@lwn.net, marty@linuxtoday.com,
Greetings!
This week is a bit quieter on announcements
as everybody has been working on the existing
projects. However, we should have some new
test releases available soon, and many promising
new features have been discussed on the mailing
lists.

Current versions:
Stable: 1.2.5 (Mad King)
Devel.: 1.2.6 beta 1

Midgard 1.2.6 beta 2 schedule
Alexander Bokovoy has announced that the
second beta of Midgard 1.2.6 should be
released quite soon, probably already on
Friday this week.
The release will first be available from
Alexander's Web site, but we will try to
add it to the CVS repository and the Midgard
Web site soon afterwards.
At this point the beta is almost finished,
but the import utility and Admin site will
still need some work.

Midgard RPMs for Mandrake
Thanks to Ronan-Yann Lorin, we now have
RPM packages of Midgard 1.2.6 beta 1 and
Midgard 1.2.5 for Linux-Mandrake.
The packages are available as both source
and binary RPMs, and should work with
Linux-Mandrake versions 6.1 and 7.0.
At this point the files can be downloaded
from Ronan-Yann's FTP site, but we look
forward to making them also available on
the main Midgard site.

Enabling user self-registration
Many sites want to enable their visitors
to register and create user accounts for
themselves. The permission system in
the Midgard 1.x series makes this a bit
difficult, as all create operations need
to be made by authenticated users.
The new access control system in Midgard 2
will make the process easier, but before
that it requires a bit of working around.
There was recently a thread on the mailing
list about this, and people interested in
deploying a user self-registration system
on their sites will probably be interested
it. Similar techniques can also be applied
to other create operations, like article
comments and bulletin boards.
The discussion (and some code examples) can
be found from the mailing list archives.
