------------------------------------------------------
I'd like to announce the first proper release of LinuxScope (was
LinuxSeeker, but I discovered that linuxseeker.com had already
been purchased), a (yawn!) new Linux package search engine.
LinuxScope attempts to draw together package information from a
wide range of distributions and other sources, and to provide a
wide range of search options.

LinuxScope can handle queries like:

	* list details for packages with a name matching "After*"
	* ditto but restricted to Debian
	* ditto but show only i386 and source packages
	* list all updated packages for the latest RedHat release

	* where can I get packages with names matching "After*"
	* ditto, but I want an FTP server in Germany (UK, US, ...)

	* list all packages which contain the file "pnpdump"

	* show all packages in the RedHat category "X11/Games"
	* show RPM details for RedHat package "netcat"
        * show DEB details for Debian package "net-acct"
        * show all files in Slackware package "netpipes"

        * show all LSMs with names matching "*net*"
        * show all LSMs with the keyword KDE

Currently, LinuxScope scans packages in the following distributions,
based on FTP mirrors in the United Kingdom.

	* Caldera OpenLinux 2.3
	* Debian slink and potato
	* Definite 7.0
	* RedHat 6.1 and 6.0
	* Mandrake 7.0
	* Slackware 4.0 and 7.0
	* SUSE 6.2

	* SunSite archive
	* KDE 1.1.2
	* Gnome

I intend to add other distributions, plus other package sources,
from time to time, At present, LinuxScope contains information on
around 46000 packages (many of which appear in more that one
distribution, of course!), some 5800 LSMs, and lists nearly 5
million files.

The new version of LinuxScope uses Glimpse to search amongst the files,
so file-based queries should be answered in reasonable time!

LinuxScope should know about FTP mirrors in various countries around
the world, based on the FTP mirrors lists for the distributions. These
are checked from time to time to check that they are valid.

LinuxScope is currently at:

I'd like to thank Agricultural Internet Services (http://www.a-i-s.co.uk)
for their generosity in allowing LinuxScope to run on their web server,
and to the UK LUG group for the domain name.
