Subject: new RFPs on sourceXchange.

***Greetings from sourceXchange!***

Since our last update, we have had several new Requests for Proposals
posted on sourceXchange. Additionally, there are 5 active projects
underway which will soon reach completion. Remember these are actual
projects paying actual dollars for development of 100% Open Source
software. We like to think this is solid validation for the
distributed piad development model that Collab.Net has pioneered with
sourceXchange.

News this month:
o New and Updated Requests For Proposals (RFP's)
 o First sourceXchange Project Completed
 o SourceXchange Statistics
o Conferences coming up: ApacheCon 2000 and the
    O'Reilly Conference on Java
o Sneak Peak at Collab.Net's Next Move

Requests For Proposals
----------------------
Currently there are 11 open RFPs in the sourceXchange database. Feel
free to submit proposals or comments on the projects that interest
you, and consider being a peer reviewer as well.

Here is a list of the current RFPs:

Sponsor: Invisible Worlds
Project: A BXXP Listener Module in the Apache 2 Server
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=21
Project Overview:

Write an Apache module for Apache 2.0 which conforms
to the Blocks eXtensible eXchange Protocol.
    http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-mrose-blocks-protocol-00.txt

Sponsor: BeOpen.com
Project: SQL Database Support for ArgoUML
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=19
Project Overview:

Develop an SQL schema that follows the UML meta-model specification
very closely, and add support to ArgoUML for accessing information
stored in an SQL database (such as MySQL).
For more info on ArgoUML see http://www.ics.uci.edu/pub/arch/uml/

Sponsor: Collab.Net
Project: Java servlet and WebMacro-based browser for Unix mbox-format
           mail archives
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=18
Project Overview:

Develop a combination of WebMacro templates and Java classes that
act as an interface to simple Unix mbox-format mailbox archives for
the purposes of rendering them as HTML and attachments. (Think
of a Java servlet/webmacro version of hypermail on steroids)

Sponsor: BeOpen.com
Project: Additional UML Diagram Support in ArgoUML
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=17
Project Overview:

Add a number of missing UML diagrams to ArgoUML using the Graph
Editing Framework (GEF) library which ArgoUML provides. These diagrams
should conform to the UML 1.3 specification.

Sponsor: BeOpen.com
Project: Graphical Object-Oriented Code Browser
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=16
Project Overview:

Rewrite the graphical interfaces of the OO-Browser to perform all
listing queries independently from the textual browser.
Develop a basic messaging API between the textual browser engine
(which is written in Lisp) and the graphical browser interfaces.
More information on the OO-Browser can be found at:
   http://www.beopen.com/manuals/oo-browser_1.html

Sponsor: BeOpen.com
Project: Graphical InfoDock/Xemacs
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=15
Project Overview:

Extend the InfoDock/XEmacs integrated development environment with
full graphical toolkit capabilities using either Qt or Gtk. This will
allow full GUI application development in Lisp with powerful built-in
   editing and information management capabilities.

Here are the RFP's we announced last time which are still open for
bids, comments, and peer review interest:

Sponsor: Hewlett-Packard
Project: Dynamic Domain Service for E-Speak
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=14
Project Overview:

This project is to allow DNS to take advantage of the e-speak dynamic
name lookup afforded by the advertising service to locate the IP
addresses of friends who are online. The developer should feel free
to implement this on top of the Berkeley name daemon (bind) if they so
desire. In other words mesh BIND and e-speak to allow people with
dynamic IP's to take advantage of the e-speak technology.

Sponsor: Novell CodeCore
Project: Apache LDAP / NDS integration
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=12
Project Overview:

An LDAP authentication module for Apache currently exists, but it is
untested with NDS and NDS v8. Therefore the goal of this Novell
CodeCore project is to modify as needed the LDAP authentication module
for the Apache web server in order to authenticate users (and other
directory entries) to a local or remote LDAP server running NDS and
NDS v8. *be sure to take a look at the comments on this RFP, as Novell
is currently reviewing these comments, and the RFP may change as a
   result.*

Sponsor: Ricoh Silicon Valley
Project: Group web application/template
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=11
Project Overview:

Develop a web application for a target group (chosen by the
developer not by Ricoh Silicon Valley) with a predetermined scope
of functionality using "Platform for Information Applications"
(PIA). Ricoh Silicon Valley believes PIA holds great promise for
the open source development of Web applications by a developer
community which includes technical writers, user interface
designers, and others whose primary skills may not be conventional
coding. For more info on PIA see: http://www.RiSource.org/PIA/

Sponsor: Walnut Creek CDROM
Project: Telephony Open Source Interface (TOSI)
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=9
Project Overview:

Implement an Open Source computer telephony interface. The interface
should be similar to Microsoft's TAPI, so that it provides similar
functionality and so that TAPI applications can be ported reasonably
easily. The reference platform will be FreeBSD, but the code should
be portable to Linux, Solaris, Windows, etc.

Sponsor: Hewlett-Packard
Project: Portable network desktop
URL: http://www.sourceXchange.com/RfpBrowse?Button=Details&rfpID=4
Project Overview:

The project is to develop an application which gives access to
applications on a remote desktop from across the
network. Applications like this have been developed before, but in
this case HP wishes to have a remote desktop written which exposes
the features of e-speak. The complete RFP gives details of other
similar projects which further reinforce the details of this
RFP. For more information on e-speak visit: http://www.e-speak.net

First sourceXchange Project Completed
--------------------------------------
The first completed sourceXchange project was a test suite framework
for the Apache Web Server sponsored by HP. The following comments
highlight the success of this project from the perspectives of
everyone involved.

"HP is very pleased with the open source software developed by Chang Liu
through the sourceXchange process. HP looks forward to using the Test
Suite for the Apache server and we invite other developers to use, modify
and enhance the software. Thanks go to Dilip Khandekar at HP and Ben
Laurie the Peer Reviewer for guiding the project."
-- Mike Balma, Director Open Source, HP

"Being a graduate student, I had the freedom to pursue my interest and
develop software tools that I thought were useful. It wasn't easy to
find real users to verify my ideas, though. The sourceXchange project
gave me a chance to work with real-world software developers and get
valuable feedback from both a commercial company (HP) and an Open Source
developer (Ben Laurie). This experience will become a solid chapter in my
dissertation. Thanks for the great work of the sourceXchange people."
-- Chang Liu, Open Source Developer

"I am pleased to have had the opportunity to participate in this
ground-breaking experiment in free software development. HP,
particularly, should be congratulated for having the vision to finance
this first sourceXchange project."
	-- Ben Laurie, Peer Reviewer

  'Java Tiger' Conference T-shirt."

Sneak Peak at Collab.Net's Next Move
------------------------------------

We at Collab.Net have been working on a new initiative for nearly as
long as we've been working on sourceXchange itself. One major
component of that new initiative is an open source toolchest we call
"Tigris". You can get this codebase at <http://www.tigris.org/>;, as
well as join the related mailing lists. As a downloadable codebase,
it's still very alpha, be warned! But we are using it in two live
production sites (including tigris.org itself) and will be enhancing
it continually, as well as using it behind sourceXchange and other
endeavors.

  Thanks!
