	Sorry for being so slow on this one.  I was trying to get some
serious benchmarks, but my SMP machine is too fast, so I'm dragging
out the old 386 again...

	Meanwhile, this fixes a number of problems, esp. major ftp
work.  Contributions have been rolling in from everywhere, as shown on
the scoreboard, and on the list (thanks Marc!).  Still may not compile
with gcc 2.7, due to structure contructors (a gcc extension) causing a
reference to memcpy.  Cheap points for someone: this would give
patches against 0.90 and 0.18.
