These courses aim to address core IT skills such as programming theory, networking basics, and relational database concepts. Each course is a two-day intensive overview of a specific topic and is intended to cover similar ground to a first-year University subject. The Internet Fundamentals course, which initially runs in Melbourne in mid-March, is a technical overview of Internet protocols, services, and applications. The course covers everything from the standards approval process to the intricacies of how web and email clients work. "Just because they're fundamentals courses doesn't mean they're easy," said Netizen CEO and training co-ordinator Kirrily Robert. Beta-testers of the first course, Internet Fundamentals, reported that it was challenging, a description which pleases Netizen's training developers and instructors. The course is aimed primarily at IT professionals who wish to broaden their skills or people who want to understand the technology that drives the Internet. Programming Fundamentals, due to start by May 2000, is an overview of programming concepts and theory for non-programmers, taught in a language independent manner. Database Fundamentals, due later this year, covers the essential skills for using, administering or developing relational databases. These courses are a departure from Netizen's usual fare of Open Source applications and operating systems training, but Ms. Robert commented that training in these essential areas is largely unavailable outside of Universities, while most commercial IT training organisations focus on applications and specific, proprietary technologies. "You can't learn the applications effectively if you don't understand the basic underlying concepts," she concluded.
