Subject: [rtl] Report: Realtime-Linux at CeBIT

Hi!

Better late than never, here is a small summary
of realtimelinux-activities at the CeBIT 2000:

I discovered three booth, were realtime-linux
was mentioned in one or the other way. Maybe
there have been more, but as the show had over
7000 exhibitors ...

Zentropix had its own demo-point, where Dave Beal
presented RTAI-Linux. But as he was about 100 feet
away from the other 30 Linux-Companies at the
US-Pavilion, it gave me the impression that
he felt a little bit lonely there, compared
to the crowd of people that you usualy found
near the big sign "Linux has Landed" (at the US-Pavilion)
and its surrounding companies like RedHat, Caldera, SuSE,
Linux International and so on.

As Lineo acquired Zentropics and RT-Control,
they had put up same posters about embedded and realtime
systems concerning that companies, but the marketing people there
had only little technical knowledge about what they have acquired:
one time, at our booth, somebody asked me for
a *realy* small embedded realtime linux system. So i sent him to
the Lineo-booth to ask for the uCsimm and the RTL-Port from Kwonks.
Five minutes later, he returned, stating
that nobody at Lineo knows anything about something
that is called "uCsimm" ...
Ok, RT-Control was just aquired some days befor
CeBIT begun, so you usualy cannot demand
the marketing people to know every product
of the acquired company, but since the uCsimm
(+Developement Kit) AFAIK is the only product
RT-Control offers, the situation amused me a little bit :-)

At our booth (linux-magazin), we (i) presented RTL2.2 on
a Single-PentiumII/400 with the "servo-demo", running
2 x Quake, one XMMS (MP3-Player), twenty FLI-Animations,
StarOffice and some more applications in parallel.
Nothing crashed (except Netscape, of
course) during the seven days of the show (and 'til now).
I also mentioned the other realtime-linux versions for
different needs (Linux/RK, KURT, Red-Linux and
RTAI, of course).
