    OpenNMS Update
==================================
    Vol 1., Issue 2
==================================

In this week's installment...

 - Project Status
 - Programming efforts/status
 - Architectural Comments
 - Poorly masked cry for help
 - OpenNMS Developer Portal
 - Our Way of Saying "Thanks!"

==================================

Project Status
==============

We've received a good deal of free press lately, including announcements on
some of the major Linux sites, including:

  - Slashdot
  - Freshmeat
  - LinuxApps.com
  - Linux Weekly News (lwn.net)

and our total number of contributors registered to date is over 550. Now if
everybody writes just a _little_ bit of code... ;-)

We're continuing down the path described last week (Java/XML) and have been
receiving code contributions from points asunder. Speaking of which...

Programming Efforts/Status
==========================

You've heard our call for help and have stepped up to the task. Special
thanks to the following folks who have taken on significant pieces of the
project, listed below by nickname and sub-projects they are working on:

   freimer     icmpd for Linux
   br_umesh Testing of Java SNMP libraries
   weave       Java API to icmpd
   sowmya      Discovery process
   RangerRick  Perl-based icmpd
   mdmonk      Perl-based icmpd

Architectural Comments
======================

Perl?!? That's right. We've got an announcement waiting in the wings on
this...more to follow soon.

Beating a Dead Horse Dept: There has been some activity on the mailing list
lately revolving around leveraging existing code/tools/etc. As noted in an
earlier email -- WE FIRMLY SUPPORT THIS PRACTICE!! If you think there is
something that we are missing, or that someone else might benefit from in a
specific sub-project, please let us know!

Whether you are in "ready to code" mode or have "writer's block", check out
some of the files at these sites for ideas:

  http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/network/admin/
  http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/network/daemons/
  http://www.linuxapps.com/?page=category&category=network

and this is just for starters. There is a LOT of open source network code
out there...

Poorly Masked Cry for Help
==========================

For those of you saying, "Boy, I wish there were something I could do...".
GREAT NEWS!! There's plenty of areas left where we still need help (and
these areas will continue to grow!). Currently, we're looking for help in
the following areas:

 - C/C++ coders for NT/Solaris/FreeBSD/etc (icmpd)
 - Database Designers (RDBMS design for underlying database)
 - Java SWING testers (to put the EUI through its paces)
 - JDBC coders (converting XML streams to database reads/writes)

If you (or anyone you know) can help in these areas, let me know. If you
plan to contribute to the effort--NOW IS THE TIME! At 20+ new contributors
signing up every day, you need to stake your ground now and help move things
forward. Otherwise, someone on the outlying fringe of the industry will
sign up for the piece you wanted to do, and will do it much slower and
efficiently than you could have. It's hardly fair that any one person
should be as intelligent as you are, not to mention good-looking, stylish,
and charming. Everyone loves you. Now's your chance to give a little
something back to the world that has placed you on a pedestal.

OpenNMS Developer Portal
========================

In our vigilance to provide the ultimate open source project participation
experience, we're going to try building some value-add content into the
OpenNMS web site. (Now what would you pay? But Wait! There's More!) This
portion of the site, available sometime later this week, will be available
only to registered members (like you--have we told you lately that we love
you?) We intend to provide links to published standards, programming specs,
"reference" projects, FAQs and HOWTOs, as well as anything else that you det
ermine to be of value.

If you're going to pitch in and help do the work, we'll at least try to make
at as painless as possible. So let us know what you'd like to see.

Our Way of Saying "Thanks!"
===========================

We've always said that we'd give the shirt off our respective backs to show
how much you mean to us. And this time, you get our pants too! Check out
http://www.opennms.org/biography.html. Yep, that's us. Left to Right:
Steve, Luke, Brian. And the real gift to you is that we dimmed the lights
(and left me out of the picture!).

Until next week, on with the Revolution!!
