? Magic Software Enterprises welcomed home last month Mike McMillin, winner of its Magic for Linux Really Cool Contest. McMillin, who is president and general manager of Comput-Ability, Incorporated, won the 18-day all expense's paid cruise for two to the Great White continent and surrounding islands for his business-to-business e-commerce site, BuyInsulation.com, built using Magic's development environment for the Linux platform. Accompanied by his son, Robert, the heavily ?insulated? McMillin and company braved temperatures as low as 20 degrees on a tour that took them to several ports on the continent. There, they climbed glaciers, visited international research stations, and communed with 3000-pound elephant seals and seven different species of penguins. On South Georgia Island, the two walked among more than 160,000 King Penguins. Naturalists accompanied the travelers, offering valuable insight into the culture and history of the region. When the World Discoverer docked, the passengers climbed into Zodiacs, the virtually unsinkable 12-passenger crafts designed by Jacques Cousteau, to investigate uninhabited islands and to travel up winding tributaries and get a closer look at marine life. One encounter was almost a little too close for comfort. ?It [a frisky Minke whale] dove under our Zodiac,? said McMillin. ?We were all holding our breath until it came up on the other side. If it had not gone under soon enough or had come up too early, it would have capsized us!? The trip was the grand prize in Magic's Really Cool Contest, introduced at the Linux Expo last May in Raleigh, NC to encourage developers to build e-commerce solutions for Linux using the Company's core application development technology. The winning solution, BuyInsulation.com, which went live last year with thousands of dollars worth of initial product placement, is designed to help the mechanical insulation industry more efficiently move overstocked, excess and/or odd-sized items out of inventory.
