   OpenNMS Update
====================
  Vol 1., Issue 4
====================

In this week's installment...

 - Project Status
 - New Projects/Wish List
 - Project Support/Partnership
 - Developer Portal/Updates On-Line
 - On the Road Again...

====================
Project Status
====================

We have significant progress to announce this week, and the community
involvement is starting to take off! Here's what's going on and where it
stands:

icmpd/Linux - freimer/weave - A second iteration of code is now available in
CVS. This revision addressed some bugs in the earlier code, but disabled the
syslogging.

icmpd/Solaris - not assigned (svenud(?)) - Ready to begin development as a
port from Linux. Let us know if you are interested in this...

icmpd (Perl) - RangerRick/mdmonk - Currently, they've been able to expose
some significant memory-handling problems in the Net::RawIP module and are
working with the developer for some fixes. Additionally, they are working
with some other teams to port underlying dependencies to other platforms.
Currently, they have a dependency on libpcap.

icmpd/NT - weave - Done. Currently under testing.

jreporter - bypo - Debugged and running. New code available via CVS. (You da
man, Oreste!)

jsnmp - br_umesh - Testing. No status available.

discovery - sowmya - Testing (dependency on icmpd, which is now available.

Documentation - not assigned - Soliciting folks to help convert existing doc
to DocBook format. Any help on this is appreciated!

New Code Wish List
====================

Oh, sure. There's a lot going on right now. But there's still more that
needs to get done! Besides, after the market "correction" for tech stocks
last Friday, many of you are looking to shore up your technical
skills/resume--just in case... And here's your chance!!

We're still actively looking for folks to take on the following:

 - Database Wizards to join the fun on the "db" mailing list
 - JDBC know-it-alls to champion persistence
 - Java coders to get warmed-up in the wings for this week's
   announcement of the Poller Spec. More details to follow...

===========================
Project Support/Partnership
===========================

We've received an amazing number of inquiries from companies and
organizations who want to help us in this monumental effort. We sincerely
appreciate all of your interest, and we're trying to put together a plan so
we can all work together as efficiently and symbiotically (What a word!!
Sometimes I even amaze myself!!) as possible. In the interim, here are the
best ways that your organization can help:

 - Donate developer time.

If you have a development staff in-house and can contribute one, two, three,
or more developers to the cause, it would be greatly appreciated.

 - Donate hardware/software in-kind.

If you have a couple of old 600Mhz P3s laying around gathering dust, send
them our way. We can always use extra boxes for testing multiple OSes.

 - Leverage the architecture.

If you are a network-element provider and need to manage your own gear,
write a poller pack that plugs into Project Bluebird and point your
customers our way. We're Java & XML based, so if you can't sell that to
customers, you're doing something wrong...

 - Call my mom and explain to her what I do for a living.

I've been trying to do this for some time and haven't been successful, even
when I had a more "normal" job. I'm toying with the idea of telling her I'm
working fast food...

Developer Portal/Updates On-Line
================================

As a part of our slowly changing web-site, the Developer Portal is slowly
coming into existence. Please let us know if there is anything in particular
that you would like to see added/changed about the site. A series of links
are waiting in the wings to help provide quick access to other
sites/technologies/reference materials you might be looking for, and
hopefully they'll be there by the end of the week.

Also, as a part of these site changes, archived editions of the OpenNMS
Update (this document) are now accessible from the web site. These will
serve as the first step toward building a Developer FAQ at OpenNMS.org.
We're working hard on a number of things (including building Project
Bluebird), but these changes are a-comin'!

====================
On the Road Again...
====================

  Q: What has 80 feet and 21 teeth?
  A: Front-row at a Willie Nelson concert.

But, seriously folks...Both Steve & I are hitting the road this week to
share the OpenNMS gospel with the world. If you are in the Albuquerque, NM
or Nashua, NH area and would like to attend a taping of the "Steve or Shane
Show", drop us a line and we'll see if we can't hook up. At the very least,
we'd let you buy us a beer...

Forever pondering, "Would you like fries with that?",

Shane O.
