A "cluster" is a network of computers which are working together (usually in parallel) on a complex computation (such as rendering a 3D image or solving a mathematical problem). A cluster of off-the-shelf desktop PCs can cheaply attain the power of an expensive, monolithic supercomputer. Mr. Saphir currently works at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center at Lawrence Berkeley Labs, where he is group leader of the Future Technologies Group. He has given talks at a number of supercomputing conferences, NASA Ames, and many computer users groups.
