Chris Coleman, the new open source editor, is the publisher of Daemon News, a web site serving the BSD community. Coleman founded the site, and served as its Editor-in-Chief, from 1998 until May, 2000. Coleman is also an author for the Daemon News Newbies column. O'Reilly Network's new BSD DevCenter covers all of BSD, including the five main distributions and two commercial add-ons. The DevCenter features original articles on BSD and related software, BSD News and News Digest, extensive resources and links, and an in-depth weekly column written by knowledgeable members of the BSD community. This week's column, "Big Scary Daemons", written by Michael Lucas, offers a walk-through of a NetBSD install by an experienced FreeBSD user. BSD is the name of derivatives of source code from the University of California, Berkeley, which were originally extensions to AT&T's Research UNIX operating system. BSD is a widely-used open source operating system used by major web sites such as Yahoo and Hotmail.
