Second Annual Linux Storage Management Workshop
October 15-19, 2000
Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science
University of Miami
Miami, Florida

Dates: October 15-19, 2000
(one day after the 4th Atlanta Linux Showcase
being held in Atlanta, Georgia --
            http://www.linuxshowcase.org/)

Location: Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science
           University of Miami
           Miami, Florida
           http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/rsmas.html

A key enabler for Linux in the enterprise is storage management
software (SMS), including journaled and cluster file systems, logical volume
managers, RAID software and hardware, backup and recovery utilities,
tape archiving and HSM, high availability, SCSI and Fibre Channel, devfs,
page cache and buffer cache issues, software RAID via MD,
and storage networking infrastructure.

The energetic Linux hacker community and leading Linux vendors
like VA Linux, Red Hat, and Suse have been very active in this area, and
have recently been joined by large OEMs like SGI, HP, and IBM
and storage management software specialists like Veritas,
Legato and Sistina.

As a follow-up to our first meeting in Darmstadt, Germany
last September (see http://linux.msede.com/lsmws/), we propose
a 4-day workshop in Miami, Florida this October.
In this 4-day workshop we propose to review the current
state-of-the-art in SMS software. We will invite leading
developers from the Linux hacker community as well as these
leading OEMs. Stephen Tweedie, Peter Braam, and several other
attendees from last year's conference in Germany
have already agreed to attend.

We believe that storage management software in Linux is evolving
very rapidly, and that Linux limitations in this area are
being addressed. Leading users are exploiting Linux for
managing large storage systems, and their experience will help
lead the way to future improvements. We plan to invite speakers
from the film industry, web infrastructure companies, and
research labs to talk about their needs and experiences as they relate
to Linux.

If you are interested in attending or presenting at this
workshop, please send email to "miami2000@sistina.com".
We will create a mailing list and will send information about
hotels, agenda, etc. to that list.

We are currently finalizing the schedule of events, and anticipate
that the first three full days (October 16-18) will be technical
sessions and panels, with the fourth day (October 19)
dedicated to tutorials. An informal party for speakers and
participants will be held on the evening of October 15th at RSMAS,
near the beach on Virgina Key.

We will post more information about the workshop
as it becomes available at the following web sites:
<http://www.globalfilesystem.org> or <http://www.linux-lvm.org>.

The registration fee for the conference is 390,- USD.

Sincerely,

The Workshop Organizers
