With an unprecedented number of Massachusetts companies participating, the show reflects the tremendous growth of the embedded systems industry in the Boston area. ESC Summer, running from July 10-12, 2000 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel and Hynes Convention Center, is an educational forum that provides engineers, developers, and project managers with the latest information on embedded technology innovations. The show floor, which is double the size of last year's event, complements the program of classes and tutorials. More than 90 exhibitors will show the latest in hardware and development tools, including dozens of new products. Local participants from the Boston area include: * CMX Systems, Inc. - A provider of software tools needed to program embedded applications in automotive, medical equipment, consumer electronics, communications, aerospace, manufacturing automation, and many other industries. * Phar Lap Software, Inc. - A provider of real-time operating systems and software development tools for embedded applications including products for Web-accessibility using standard Internet technology. * Software Emancipation Technology, Inc. - Provides a software Development Information System (DIS), which improves software quality and development and reduces maintenance costs and time-to-market. * The MathWorks - A developer and supplier of technical computing software, with more than 500 employees and headquarters in Natick, Massachusetts. "With high tech businesses proliferating along the Route 128 technology corridor, Boston is affirming its role as a hotbed of innovation for embedded devices," said Lindsey Vereen, editorial director of EMBEDDED SYSTEMS PROGRAMMING magazine and ESC conference chairman. "Thanks in part to the new technologies coming out of these companies, ubiquitous computing is becoming a reality." Exhibitors are expected to announce and display a variety of new products at the show including embedded web browsers and tools for e-mail capability as well as memory management and connectivity products. Two local companies, EBSnet and eMation, have scheduled press conferences for Tuesday, July 11. EBSnet will announce the release of the next version of its software product, which offers enhanced security and remote configuration capabilities. eMation will present Internet infrastructure solutions for e-business. In addition to the two-day exhibition, the conference program features classes on topics ranging from Internet-appliance design, and open-source development, to communications protocols, taught by a faculty of 44 industry experts. Special conference events include a morning "Shop Talk" discussion group where participants can share their experiences on specific projects, a keynote address, titled "Reformat the Dog: The World of Weird Embedded Systems," and the "Summer Salsa" show floor reception on Tuesday evening.
