From: "Shane O'Donnell" <shane@www.opennms.org> To: <general@opennms.org> Subject: OpenNMS: OpenNMS Update v1.17 Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 01:08:37 -0400 =============== OpenNMS Update =============== Vol 1., Issue 17 =============== In this week's installment... - Project Status - Progress Continues - Traveling/Writing/Presenting - Coding Projects Underway - Hola from Big Sur - The Wish List =============== Project Status =============== Progress Continues: Another week of less tangible progress, yet progress nonetheless. Weave has been focusing on getting some specs (details later) which is frustrating on two accounts: 1) He'd rather be coding (understandably), and 2) I'd rather he be coding. But regardless, this is the ugly part of the job that needs to get done so that we can continue to leverage all of you in this process. And that whole business of keeping you involved is critical. Why? Because you are smarter than we are, you keep us honest, you have good ideas, you've got time when you can code/write doc/etc, and you're just so darn good-looking! Blatant schmoozing aside, we've got several divergent yet inter-related efforts going on, and with Weave having a hand in all of them, our ability to show tangible results is somewhat single-threaded. We are actively working to fix this, and with an upcoming release of some coding specs, we should be out of the woods. For those of you curious as to what specs are being developed, here's the scoop. We've tentatively decided, given some of the talented folks who've recently joined the project, to kick-off an effort to replace the components of JSDT that we need (See Update v1.16 for details on JSDT). This will not be an insignificant effort, but it's critical for several aspects of the product, not the least of which is the event subsystem. More details on this in the "wish list" later in the Update, and details on the rest of our efforts/intangible accomplishments in the "Programming efforts..." section. Traveling/Presenting/Writing: On the non-coding front, the rest of the team has been pretty busy as well. Steve, master of all things web and PHP, has got the new web site all dressed up with no place to go. Seems there are some problems between Apache/PHP/MySQL/Solaris that we didn't run into on our development box (Linux). He assures me we are fixing this, and the general consensus is to get rid of Solaris. Luke has been waste-deep in communications with Java Users Groups. This is part of our "Spreading the OpenNMS Gospel"-effort and not surprisingly, there is a lot of interest out there from developers looking to work on a cool project. I've been trying to re-work some of our existing presentations, as well as writing papers for the ACM so we can present at one of their upcoming conferences. I'm checking on the rules for publication of the paper, but rest assured, it will be made available as soon as possible. Speaking of making things available, there are copies of our "Road Show" presentations available on the web site at http://www.opennms.org/files/presentations for anyone that would like to get a copy. Additionally, some of the newer re-worked presentations will be up soon (e.g., the one from TriLUG last week), as soon as I get a chance to "sanitize them for your protection". Hopefully, my battery will last long enough during this flight. I'm somewhere over Nevada right now. And my travel note for the day: Any flight can be made just about 2 hours longer just by showing "Erin Brockovich" in-flight. Coding Projects Underway: - Event Subsystem -- Underway. Rick is still kicking butt and taking names. Currently, eventd IS multi-threaded with an active TCP listener. Weave will have CVS updated with Rick's latest code as soon as he's done with the specs. - capsd -- Underway. Sowmya, our Javanian goddess, has us successfully discovering our full suite of TCP-based services on interfaces as they are discovered by the discovery process. Rock on, Sowmya! - nouveau jsdt -- Spec has seen a draft review. Weave is spending a lot of the time filling up white boards, swearing under his breath, and drinking heavily. Oops. Strike that. He's actually been swearing out loud, and usually at me. But then again, you've pretty much got to take a number to swear at me around the office... =============== Hola from Big Sur =============== Reminder: My Julia Roberts-induced pain is directly attributable to my travel to the O'Reilly Open Source Conference. At the conference, I'll be wandering aimlessly and handing out OpenNMS T-shirts to the folks on our membership roster also in attendance. Don't forget to hunt me down if you're looking for a T-shirt. Or if you have beer money burning a hole in your pocket. =============== The Wish List =============== So if you're in Monterey, so am I. And what a great excuse to get together and talk about OpenNMS. If you're not, and sitting at home alone in a dark, dank apartment watching "Taxi Driver" over and over, maybe some of the following tasks would be nice diversions to keep you from your Jodie Foster obsession: - Java coders needed to help out on the pending JSDT-replacement efforts - JDBC coders needed to help Sowmya out on the persistence piece of capsd - Swing coders needed to convert some of the existing AWT-based code to full-blown Swing - Servlet wonks needed to build the spec (and code) for the DP-to-MS communications. If the acronyms don't mean anything to you, go read the doc on the web site. And in the end, the code you take, is equal to the code you make, Shane O. ======== Shane O'Donnell OpenNMS shane@opennms.org ================== It's Revolution, not Evolution at http://www.opennms.org !! = = = = = = = OpenNMS.org List Message = = = = = = = = = To unsubscribe from this list, send a message with a body of "unsubscribe general <email>" to majordomo@opennms.org.
