New Web Site On-Line:

The skeptics said it would never happen. The cynics said it could never be
this good. But it's true--the new web site is up and quite functional.

It should look at least somewhat familiar, as we haven't gotten around to
revamping the content yet, but there are a few twists and turns to this bold
new PHP-based environment.

  - Because your "Nickname" is the key in our database, and MySQL is
case-insensitive on key fields, there have been some duplicate IDs. If you
were one of them, we'll notify you via email under separate cover

  - Because we now have the underlying database, we've implemented the
ability for you to change all aspects of your profile at will--INCLUDING
YOUR PASSWORD!

  - Forget your password? No prob, Bob! Just click on the new (and everso
cleverly titled) "I forgot my password" link on the home page.

  - Forget the web site address? Alas, just go to http://www.opennms.org

What's up with JSDT?:

No sooner spoken than temporarily retracted...

I told you last week that we were embarking on writing our own
implementation of JSDT (Java Shared Data Toolkit) for our internal messaging
needs. Well, we've gotten two new pieces of information that could play in
this decision.

Last week at the O'Reilly OSCON (more details below), I bumped into Danese
Cooper, Sun's Manager of Sun Source Licensing Programs. As I started a
tirade on Sun's crappy licensing strategies, she beat me to the punch. She
also noted that JSDT has plans to be released under Sun's "Community Source
License (SCSL), but that with some of their other efforts (e.g.,
OpenOffice.org), it has been back-burnered. In the interim, though, she said
she could help us to get a "one-off" version of the license to enable us to
continue development with this technology.

We're hesitantly pleased with this information, but have not yet heard back
from Danese or any other duly appointed Sun official to give us this
license. We're giving them a little time, but not much, as we're also
formulating a backup plan.

As Paul Simon eloquently advised, "Make a new plan, Stan", and in this case,
that plan revolves around OpenJMS, an open source implementation of the Java
Messaging Service. Additional details can be found at http://www.openjms.org

As always, we are interested in your feedback on this kind of stuff, so if
you have any drop us a line. Or perhaps more importantly, drop Sun a line
and let them know that you'd like to see them expedite the JSDT licensing
for OpenNMS. You can reach the appropriate folks at Sun at
scsl_input@sun.com

Coding Projects Underway:

Event Subsystem -- Underway. Rick is still kicking butt and taking names.
Currently, eventd IS multi-threaded with an active TCP listener. Rick's also
approaching the research part of his Master's Thesis, so if you have quality
material (or know where you might be able to score some) on event
correlation, drop Rick or me a note or post it to the "events" mailing list.

capsd -- Internal testing. A functional version is in code-review and has
been committed to our internal CVS. This will be posted publicly very soon.

nouveau jsdt -- Cancelled per note on JSDT above.

icmpd/Perl -- Per the porting team, "Solaris sucks!" I'm not exactly sure
what this means, but the folks at Hoover and Eureka had better be on their
toes!!

O'Reilly Open Source Conference Recap
=====================================
This conference rocks! Great speakers and industry luminaries wandering the
halls and brewpubs for the duration of the event. Kudos to the O'Reilly team
(as if a veritable zoo on my bookshelf isn't tribute enough!)

Anyway, got to see a number of you from the OpenNMS community out there as
well, and as always, you guys rock! Note: In my own private dictionary,
"guys" is not a gender-specific term. Anyway, a few of you are now proud
owners of first issue OpenNMS T-shirts and are undoubtedly wearing them with
pride.

But from a "gettin' stuff done" perspective, if the Sun license change comes
through, my trip was worth every penny and more. Plus, we made some
interesting contacts with some folks with unmet management requirements that
could make great partners. We'll keep you posted on those projects as
information comes available.

But all in all, a great conference. Also, whether you could attend or not,
check out the presentations, which are all online at
http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/w/sessions.html

Love Springs Eternal at OpenNMS
===============================

In these days of crime and pollution, we could all stand a little good news
every now and then.

Our good news this week is that we have had, to the best of our knowledge,
the first marriage within the ranks of the OpenNMS community. And to add to
the beauty of the moment, our newly-weds both started new jobs this week
with one of our partners in the local open source community, Red Hat (or as
we say in the Latin, Reddius Hattum).

Realistically, they were already engaged when they joined the project, but
we take full credit for providing them a nurturing environment for their
love to blossom and take shape. Altogether now..."Longer than there've been
fishes in the ocean..."

Seriously, congratulations to Tammy and Brent (who may be better known for
bringing the world http://www.linuxheadquarters.com

The Registry (formerly , The Wish List)
=======================================

Weddings are a time for reflection and appreciation for the loved ones in
our own lives. They also provide a chance to look to t he future, toward our
destinies, and more importantly, our shared aspirations. And above all, they
provide a prime opportunity to drink as much hard liquor as you can hold on
somebody else's tab. That, my friends, is true love.

For those of you seeking still other ways to express your love, might I be
so bold as to suggest the following:

  - JDBC coders needed to help Sowmya out on the persistence piece of capsd
  - Swing coders needed to convert some of the existing AWT-based code to
full-blown Swing
  - Servlet wonks needed to build the spec (and code) for the DP-to-MS
communications. If the acronyms don't mean anything to you, go read the doc
on the web site.

Until next week, we'll leave you with an age old bit of wisdom, often
associated with weddings: Put your left hand in, put your left hand out, put
your left hand in, and shake it all about. You do the hokey-pokey and you
turn yourself around.

That, my friends, is TRULY what it is all about.
