Project Status
================

Growing by Leaps and Bens:

The Bluebird Core Team has grown by one (should I be passing out cigars?).
We are thrilled to announce the addition of Ben Reed to the team. Ben comes
to OpenNMS directly from a gig where he was writing a Perl-based performance
management package for a non-open source company by day and at night,
writing his flagship "DJ in a Box", a Perl-based web radio package. One
night, we found him wandering the streets aimlessly and offered to let him
combine his skills into one really cool job. He was obviously dazed, since
he said "Yes".

While he promises to continue to maintain DJIAB, he will be doing primarily
testing/QA/build manager stuff for OpenNMS, as well as general systems
administration and documentation. He, too, comes from the OpenView world, so
he at least speaks the same language as the rest of us, although he often
uses much bigger words.

A hearty welcome to Ben. Now get to work.

Job Opportunities at OpenNMS:

Or, "How to kill your career with a smile".

So things aren't really that bleak. We're generally a pretty enjoyable group
to work with, very casual, and EXTREMELY focused on building one serious
management platform.

If you are looking for an opportunity to fix all of the problems you've
likely been b****ing about for the last few years, build a cool network and
systems management platform, and cut your teeth on some pretty cool
technologies, all while sleeping well at night because you are writing
open-source code and quite possibly making a difference in the grand scheme
of things, this might be the job for you!

We're currently looking for another ace developer to add to the core team.
Specifically, we want somebody with experience in Java, XML/XSL, JDBC, CVS,
open source tools in this space, including almost anything from the Apache
XML project, with a good attitude, and the ability to work in Cary, NC on a
daily basis. And if you bring all the right skills to the table, we might be
flexible on the last one. Lead guitarists need not apply. We know your type.

Think this might be the job for you. Think again. Then send us a resume at
luke@opennms.org . DON'T REPLY TO THIS EMAIL! It will go to the list and
only embarrasses you and annoys everyone else. Besides, that's the first
test in our hiring process.

More on the Beta:

My blurb last week prompted many more questions than feedback, so please
allow me to divulge all the details we currently have on the beta program.

Currently, we are targeting a pre-beta program with local universities and
other organizations interested in providing development assistance. This
pre-beta would begin next week, with a ramp-up period to get people
comfortable with the technologies, the project, and the code.

A more formalized, traditional beta program will be kicked off on November
15th (best guess) and will last roughly four weeks. Depending on the results
of this beta, we will either go gold following this or, institute another
shorter trial period immediately following (mid- January timeframe, to allow
for that holiday lull).

Our test plans are vague at best right now, as we've still got a significant
development bubble to get past. Things are looking good for us holding this
timeline, but only time will tell.

Interested in helping code, writing test plans, participating in the beta?
Let me know.

Coding Projects Underway:

* Documentation -- Even yet still more updates from Steve. Latest and
greatest is version 1.0e of the Extractor design doc. As always, it's
available from the web site under the "Developer Docs" section.

* Events -- Sowmya's kickin' a** and takin' names.

* discovery/capsd -- Internal testing is complete. Discovery code is being
upfitted with additional JavaDoc and capsd is still in code review.
Anticipate addition to production CVS later this week.

* AWT < - > SWING Conversion -- Pended. Any interest in picking this one up?

* icmpd/Perl -- No update. But everybody saw the note from Chuck. I'm
meeting with him on Friday. Hopefully have news for next week.

* Service Control Manager -- Development underway, but ownership has just
changed. We expect a slight delay during a "coming up to speed period", but
then we'll be rockin' and/or rollin'.

* Bug fixes for jReporter -- Development underway. Some rewrites were
necessary.

* Extractors -- First production release of Jacinta's code is being added to
CVS later today. A textbook example of saving code with getopts.

* Java MIB Compiler -- Old code provided courtesy David Nettleman. Looking
for a new owner. Care to dance with the devil (or javacc)?

Colorado Springs Road Show
================================

If you plan to be in the Colorado Springs area and would like to be a
contestant on "Let's Drink Beer and Talk About Events!", let me know.

I'll be meeting with THE Rick Casey sometime that afternoon, hopefully at a
local watering hole, and then it will be off to CTU for the Pike's Peak LUG
meeting. Details on the presentation are available at
http://www.opennms.org/engage/ .

If you're going to miss Friday night and would like to meet over the
weekend, let me know. I'm sticking around out there for an extra day or two,
so we should be able to hook up. Let me know.

The Wish List
================

Lot's of progress being made on various fronts. That's the good news. The
even better news is that there's still plenty of room for you to join in all
the fun. Here're some of the things you should seriously consider when
searching for your next diversion:

 - Add SNMPv3 functionality to jSNMP
 - Download the discovery code and give it the once over. Hell, you can even
run it.
 - Implement the event correlation spec.
 - Help us by not helping us. What?!? You can always pitch in on one of the
projects we depend on, like:
   - PostgreSQL
   - Apache Tomcat
   - Apache SOAP
   - Apache Xerces
   - OpenJMS
   - Any of the others we are leveraging (or plan/hope to) in the Bluebird
Project.
Of course, we'd rather have you around. We appreciate the company.

And who'da thunk it, but we actually made the SNMP FAQ. Go figure. If you'd
like to join us as we revel in our splendor, you can check out the link at
http://www.cs.uu.nl/wais/html/na-dir/snmp-faq/part2.html

And if that isn't reason enough to think we might actually be legit, my name
now shows up on a web page in Germany (and it's not a guestbook at a porn
site!). The advance stuff on LinuxWorld Expo in Germany is out and it
includes our presentation "Open Source Tools in Network Management: Waking a
Sleeping Giant".

You can check out the abstract at

l.html .
