To: python-list@python.org (Python mailing list), Subject: Python 1.6, the final release, is out! From: Guido van Rossum <guido@beopen.com> Date: Tue, 05 Sep 2000 13:49:38 -0500 Newsgroups: comp.lang.python OK folks, believe it or not, Python 1.6 is released. Please go here to pick it up: http://www.python.org/1.6/ There's a tarball and a Windows installer, and a long list of new features. CNRI has placed an open source license on this version. CNRI believes that this version is compatible with the GPL, but there is a technicality concerning the choice of law provision, which Richard Stallman believes may make it incompatible. CNRI is still trying to work this out with Stallman. Future versions of Python will be released by BeOpen PythonLabs under a GPL-compatible license if at all possible.
