SuSE Linux AG Announce Linux Version for SPARC Processors on Internet

Nuremberg, 7 September 2000 - SuSE Linux AG, one of the world's leading
Linux specialists, today announced a version of SuSE Linux for the SPARC
architecture from Sun Microsystems. In this way SuSE is striving for
consistency in its strategy of cross platform Linux support and is making
the superior features of the Linux operating system available for other
applications within the professional environment.

Sun is a leading manufacturer of high availability SPARC processor based
workstations and servers, which are both very popular with Internet Service
Providers as well as universities because of their reliability and
scalability. The high-performance platform from Sun enjoys wide recognition
in software and electronic development, mechanical construction, printing
and electronic media, telecommunication, banking, insurance and finance.

To date, SuSE Linux has supported PowerPC, S/390 and Alpha processors in
addition to the Intel platform. Having now been ported to the SPARC
architecture SuSE Linux is at present an ideal common server platform
within the professional environment. SuSE Linux not only excels through
comprehensive networking, stability and flexibility but also through
uniform and rational administration of cross platform, heterogeneous
networks. To the same degree costs for development and purchase of
strategic software products within an enterprise can be minimized. The low
Linux operating system purchasing costs and the permanently reduced
administration overhead allow a significant reduction in the ownership
costs of large server farms.

With its extended hardware support - most recently for the S/390 and the
SPARC platform - SuSE has made Linux into one of the top server operating
systems.

The complete version of SuSE Linux 7.0 for SPARC is now available free of
charge under ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/sparc

SuSE Linux are selectively looking for users to promote the further
development of this major project with their mailing list
