With features such as motion detection, manual zoom and a DC Iris lens for bright outdoor conditions, the AXIS 2120 is ideal for diverse Internet or intranet camera applications, such as facility monitoring and surveillance or bringing live remote images to a company's web site. When triggered, the motion detection feature will alert a specified recipient via e-mail, who can then view the image sequence over the web. Based on the powerful, open-sourced Linux operating system, this compact, high-performance network camera delivers live video images at up to 30 frames per second (which is considered full motion video) across an Ethernet network. “In addition to professional web attraction, this camera lends itself to a number of new applications with its ease of use, affordability and full functionality,” notes Martin Gren, chief technology officer, Axis Communications’ Camera Division. “It is now affordable and easy to remotely monitor areas inside or outside a facility—for instance, the main entrance or a parking lot—via the web or intranet. The AXIS 2120 is an all-in-one solution that takes advantage of the existing infrastructure. The camera connects directly to an existing network without the need for additional hardware or software.” Ease of Use Makes the AXIS 2120 Ideal for a Wide Range of Applications The AXIS 2120, which received an honorable mention at ISC EXPO 2000’s New Product Showcase, can be accessed, controlled and managed at the click of a mouse, using any standard web browser. By transmitting video quality images, the AXIS 2120 Network Camera is ideal for intranet applications, such as remote monitoring and website attraction, where live images of weather conditions, distant locations or unusual events can be used to draw visitors to a site. The AXIS 2120’s intuitive web-based interface features an easy-to-use wizard that simplifies installation and configuration. Users connect the camera to a network or a modem, assign an IP address and are set to view images remotely from any PC. “The new AXIS 2120 is by far the best product of its kind that I’ve tried,” notes Lennart Lovstrand, a senior software engineer at Microsoft’s TV Server Division. “Its speed, quality and ease of use are just outstanding. And the new motion detection feature allows me to configure the camera according to my exact needs. I use several Axis network cameras at home for remote monitoring, inside and out.” AXIS 2120 Product Features Based on high-quality Sony CCD, the AXIS 2120 produces state-of-the-art image quality and is capable of delivering up to 30 frames per second across 10/100 Megabit networks. In addition, motion detection notification is flexible and easy, with several options available during configuration. Users can either create a single window for the whole image area, or separate the image area into up to three windows with individual alarm threshold profiles. For instance, a user who wants to monitor the parking lot can define and configure one window to capture the bottom part of the door leading to the parking lot with low motion sensitivity, so that animals walking by would not trigger an event notification. The middle of the door could be configured at high sensitivity on the weekends, so that a person touching the door handle would trigger an urgent event notification, with low sensitivity during the work week. The camera is encased in sturdy metal. For outdoor use, an outdoor enclosure can be purchased from Axis partners. Pricing and Availability The AXIS 2120 is available immediately with a suggested list price of $1,199USD from all major distributors. A complete list of distributors and resellers can be found at http://www.us.axis.com/. Network Cameras Offer Advantages Over Web Cameras Unlike web cameras, network cameras have a built-in web server and attach directly to the network, precluding the need for a PC. In fact, the AXIS 2120 Network Camera has none of the extra costs usually associated with a web camera—such as expensive software, dedicated workstations and applications, video cabling or PC frame-grabber cards.
