LUGOD, The Linux Users' Group of Davis, will hold the following events
in the middle of November:

Linux Demonstration:

  Why:

    Members of LUGOD will have a PC set up and running Linux.
    Attendees are free to try out the system, and are encouraged to
    ask questions.  Information on Linux and LUGOD, and Linux freebies,
    will be available.

  Topic:

    "Open Source Bioinformatics" using Linux
    presented by Eric Engelhard of Sagres Discovery

  Details:

    Engelhard of Sagres Discovery will talk about a Linux
    bioinformatics pipeline he is building which consists of an FTP
    server, a web server, a PostgreSQL database, PHP, Samba, a small
    Beowulf cluster, and Perl.

    Bioinformatics is defined as "the use of computers in solving
    information problems in the life sciences, mainly, it involves
    the creation of extensive electronic databases on genomes,
    protein sequences, etc."
