S16: A Tour of Linux Distributions
Elizabeth O. Coolbaugh, Executive Editor, LWN.net

A Linux distribution has, at its core, the Linux kernel, licensed under the GNU
General Public License (GPL). However, the majority of software included in
most distributions is application software, software that allows a person to
perform one or more functions. The application portion of a distribution comes
from multiple sources, licensed under a variety of "free/open source" licenses.
This session will examine the breadth and diversity of Linux distributions,
through well-known ones such as Red Hat, Slackware, Debian, etc., to over a
hundred lesser known ones. This session will look at the reasons numerous
distributions have come into being and how to choose between them, and talk
about the advantages of having a multiplicity of distributions available and
also the pitfalls. It will finish up with a tour of the better-known,
lesser-known and even some virtually unknown distributions, with comments on
when and why you would choose to use them.

Wednesday, January 31st 2:30pm-3:45pm
S22: Linux Tools for the Graphic Artist
Michael J. Hammel, Author, Graphics Muse

Linux has come a long way on the desktop, and that includes tools designed for
the graphic artists. While the biggest advances lie in the world of 3D with the
release of Blender 2.0, Linux also has support for video, vector and raster
image manipulation in varying degrees of user friendliness. This session will
discuss what tools are available in the various arenas of graphic arts
development. Included will be demonstrations of commercial and public tools run
by volunteers from the companies and groups which work on these products. This
session will be targeted to all users interested in what Linux can do for them
in the graphics arts market, from design to layout.

Dennis Tenney, LWN.net, a division of Tucows

This tutorial continues where Linux System Administration in a Large Network
Environment Part 1 leaves off. This tutorial will touch on the management of
network-wide hardware resources (disks, printers, etc), network services, an
introduction to security procedures and tools, and finishes with network
administration tools and communications techniques. These tutorial complements
Part 1, but attendance in Part 1 is not required. Sources of in depth
information for further study are given for each topic. Students are expected
to have had some exposure to Linux system administration.
