Ganymede provides support for concurrent, team-based management of network directory services. It features a multithreaded database server with support for plug-in Java classes to customize the structure, management, and distribution of network directory data. Ganymede allows large groups of administrators to share administrative control over designated portions of a master network directory database, and provides transactional reliability and intelligent constraint management to keep network directories consistent. Ganymede keeps complete audit trails for all activity and can send email notification of relevant directory changes to every member of your admin team, keeping administrative teams coordinated and effective. Ganymede's sophisticated graphical user interface is designed to provide a high enough level of ease and safety of use to allow even relatively untrained users to make changes to the directory database. Ganymede has been designed and implemented over a five year period to act as the glue that holds your admin teams and your directory services together. -- It has been just over a year since the last widely publicized release of the Ganymede directory management system. During that time, ARL:UT has been using Ganymede in production full-time, with more than 50 administrators sharing administrative privileges over our laboratory's NIS, DNS, Samba, Windows NT, LDAP, Sendmail, and tacacs services. Development during the last year has been extremely active, as we have pushed to make Ganymede ready for the world. This release of Ganymede is far faster, far more stable, far more memory efficient, far better documented, and far more complete than any previous release. This release meets all of the architectural goals I have been working towards for 1.0. Bulk editing through a high-speed XML client is in, and there is now clean separation between the base Ganymede distribution and the schema kits which customize Ganymede for a given network environment. Interested parties can now author, maintain, and distribute their own network directory toolkits for use with Ganymede. We are also releasing the first schema kit for use with the 1.0 series Ganymede distribution. The Ganymede userKit provides user and group account management with support for synchronizing both user and group accounts to your Windows NT PDC, as well as support for UNIX passwd and group files, using either crypt() or md5Crypt()-hashed passwords. It is my intention to formally release Ganymede 1.0 in 6-8 weeks, after folks have had time to give 1.0p1 a try in their environments and provide feedback. My goal for Ganymede 1.0 is simply to have better and more integrated documentation, and to take care of any issues reported with 1.0p1. My goal for userKit 1.0 is to include pre-written scripts to handle password synchronization with Samba with support for Windows 98 and NT-style password hashing, in addition to the Windows NT synchronization included with 1.0p1. Longer-term, I hope to work with interested folks in producing a robust and well documented schema kit that includes support for all of the directory services that we are using in-house at ARL, including IP and DNS management, automounter, email, NIS netgroups, and more. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Abbey jonabbey@arlut.utexas.edu Applied Research Laboratories The University of Texas at Austin Ganymede, a GPL'ed metadirectory for UNIX http://www.arlut.utexas.edu/gash2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- To make changes to your subscription to the ganymede announcement list, send mail to majordomo@arlut.utexas.edu.
