From: Sean Reifschneider <jafo-pythonlist@tummy.com> To: python-list@python.org Subject: ANNOUNCE: Python 2.1a1 SRPM Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 12:00:09 -0700 Stop the presses! Heh, I've always wanted to say that... I decided to pull the February KRUD (our Redhat 7.0-based distribution, http://www.tummy.com/krud/) back from test and add Python2.1a1 to it (in addition to 2.0 and 1.5.2). The binary is called "python2.1" to allow for easily testing your programs with 2.1 while allowing you to fall back in case of problems. The SRPM is available at: ftp.tummy.com:/pub/tummy/RPMS/SRPMS You will also need the "expat-1.1-3tummy.src.rpm" SRPM (available in the same location) to build the binary above (it prevents a conflict with the w2c-libwww-devel RPM). By default, it builds a binary named "python2.1" -- this can be changed by commenting out the "2.1" line at the very top of the spec file. To build a binary RPM from the SRPM above, do (for example): rpm --rebuild expat-1.1-3tummy.src.rpm rpm -i /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/expat-1.1-3tummy.i386.rpm rpm --rebuild python-2.1a1-1tummy.src.rpm rpm -i /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/python-2.1a1-tummy.i386.rpm rpm -i /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/python-tkinter-2.1a1-tummy.i386.rpm rpm -i /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/python-devel-2.1a1-tummy.i386.rpm These commands will build binary RPMs tailored exactly to your system (hopefully avoiding problems with 6.2 and 7.0 differences). Note that these SRPMs are in RPM v4 format. If you are running RedHat 6.2 or older without the errata applied (shame on you), you'll need to upgrade to install version 3.0.5 of RPM, available at: ftp.valinux.com:/pub/mirrors/redhat/redhat/updates/6.2/i386 as: rpm-3.0.5-9.6x.i386.rpm rpm-build-3.0.5-9.6x.i386.rpm rpm-devel-3.0.5-9.6x.i386.rpm rpm-python-3.0.5-9.6x.i386.rpm If you have any problems with the SRPM, let me know. Hopefully it will allow you to more easily test Python 2.1a1 and report problems with it to the development team. Enjoy, Sean -- Canadian phone sex: What color touque are you wearing?
