From: rhett <rhett@lineo.com> Subject: Lineo announces new uClinux Development Kit Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 9:17:00 To: lwn@lwn.net FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LINEO RELEASES UCDIMM FOR MOTOROLA DRAGONBALL VZ AND NEW LINEO UCLINUX DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM uCevolution Provides Interchangeable Host Platform for the uCdimm Family of Microcontroller Modules LINDON, UT - Feb. 14, 2001 - Lineo™, Inc, a leading innovator in embedded systems, real-time and high availability solutions, today announced the availability of the uCdimm™ microcontroller module for the DragonBall VZ microcontroller and uCevolution, a new host platform which gives developers a quick way to cross port a variety of processors. These two new products will be bundled in the Lineo uClinux™ Development Kit. uCevolution The Lineo uCevolution development platform and family of embedded microcontroll er modules paired with the uClinux operating system make an ideal platform for embedded Internet appliance development. uCevolution provides developers with the capability to exchange processor cores by simply switching a DIMM-style microcontroller module. In addition to this innovative flexibility, uCevolution also offers over seven square inches of prototyping space and a host of standard connectors including: two ethernet ports, two serial ports, two USB ports and connectivity for external LCD touch screens. This assures developers maximum access to processor specific features and I/O bus. The uCevolution development platform provides developers with faster time-to-market by making development, prototyping and cross platform porting to a variety of processor families quick and convenient. "uCevolution is the ideal host environment for the development of cutting edge embedded applications. Now designers can migrate to more powerful processors with different peripheral sets without changing host boards," said Tim Bird, Lineo CTO. uCdimm DragonBall VZ The Lineo uCdimm microcontroller module has efficient power usage capabilities and in advanced power management can be battery operated. It also comes embedded with the powerful uClinux operating system, an open source project funded and maintained by Lineo. The small uCdimm microcontroller (1.6 in x 2.9 in) fits in a standard DIMM socket, ideal for small embedded devices and features on-board ethernet, including magnetics, and the ability to control up to 22 input/output devices. The new DIMM form factor now gives developers access to the popular Motorola DragonBall VZ feature set which includes the faster 33 MHz Motorola 68k core and enhanced LCD display support. Future uCdimm family members will include FPGA, ARM7, ARM9, M68K/ColdFire, SuperH and StrongARM. uClinux uClinux is an open source project funded and maintained by Lineo. It was made popular by its ability to run on processors without memory management hardware and has a typical kernel footprint of only 512k bytes or less. Lineo's ongoing investment in the uClinux operating system provides developers with continued access to emerging microprocessor families through professional services, research and development. uClinux is used in numerous devices such as: Axis Network Camera, Lineo NETtel VPN router, Aplio Internet phone, Adomo set top appliance, Crossport Pivio Secure Broadband and NetSilicon's NET+Lx development platform. "The uCdimm microcontroller module allows designers to have a quick and easy start with the uClinux operating system by providing unparalleled development accessibility," said Jeff Dionne, Lineo VP of research. "Lineo is proud to continue to maintain and fund uClinux as an open source project designed to bring the power of Linux to microcontrollers." Pricing and Availability Lineo uCdimm DragonBall Development Kit is now being sold for $995. The Development Kit includes the Lineo uCdimm DragonBall microcontroller module, uCevolution host platform, uClinux support CD and documentation. The uCdimm microcontroller module can also be purchased as a stand-alone product.
