IBM developerWorks Launches Chinese Language Site

Free, Localized Web Site Targets Chinese Developers Who Build and
               Deploy Open Standards-Based Applications

    BEIJING, China--Feb. 16, 2001--IBM today launched its
developerWorks(1) China site for China's rapidly growing community of
software application developers. The URL is:
www.ibm.com/developerWorks/cn.
The IBM developerWorks China site is an online resource for
professional developers and university students in China who want to
learn about open standards-based application development. IDC predicts
the number of professional developers in China will double to over a
half-million by 2005, making it one of the world's fastest growing
developer communities.
The IBM developerWorks China site is tailored to the needs of the
nation's developers. The site contains content in Simplified Chinese,
it is run by a dedicated local team and is hosted on a local server in
Beijing. Developers will find localized content such as: Enterprise
Java Beans articles, a graphical user interface called "MiniGui" for
Linux, Java servlets and a Web application model from top Chinese
universities and local technical experts. The technology "zones" also
include selected translated content from other developerWorks sites.
Since the beta version of the developerWorksChina site was
announced in October 2000, site traffic has doubled monthly. IBM
developerWorks improved the site based on feedback from Chinese
developers, adding new articles, tutorials, book reviews, downloads
and tips across all the zones.
Free technology "zones" on developerWorks China include Linux(2)
and Open source, Java(3) technology, XML, Web and Components, in
addition to special topic sections on Security and "Unicode" for
developers who code in more than one programming language. Each zone
and special topic features valuable technical resources such as
articles, tools, tips, code, tutorials and columns.
"The response to the beta version of developerWorks China has been
extremely positive as IBM forms an online global community of
developers," said Chris Bahr, Program Director, developerWorks and
alphaWorks. "developerWorks China is designed to address the local
Chinese development community's needs, providing this fast-growing
community of programmers with free online resources that improve their
technical skills as well as build and deploy better quality
applications."
