The high performance cluster system, featuring 96 AMD Athlon™ processors, is running computational fluid dynamics applications in support of the Boeing Delta IV Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program at the company's Space & Communications division in Huntington Beach, Calif. Boeing Delta IV engineers tested several other processor platforms at Linux NetworX facilities before purchasing the AMD Athlon processor-based cluster. The Delta IV is the newest class of rockets developed by Boeing that will enter service in 2002 and will have the capability of lifting satellite payloads of up to 29,000 pounds into geosynchronous transfer orbit. "The Linux NetworX cluster system and the performance of the AMD Athlon processor provide an excellent solution that satisfies our requirements," said Daniel Hart, Director of Systems Engineering and Integration, Delta IV Launch System Program for Boeing. "We are delighted The Boeing Company has chosen an AMD processor-based solution, as this win reflects confidence in AMD's leading technology at the level of large U.S. enterprises," said David Somo, vice president of the Americas sales & marketing group for AMD. "The innovative AMD Athlon processor provides stability, reliability, and compatibility, as well as excellent performance for enterprise-level computing. AMD is pleased with the win, and the successful partnership with Linux NetworX." "We're excited about working with AMD's advanced processor technology, and specifically using the AMD Athlon processor. It ensures that Linux NetworX customers will have access to the latest cutting-edge technology in our scalable cluster solutions," said Clark Roundy, vice president of Linux NetworX. "The high performance and reliability of the AMD Athlon is a nice match for our customers who are looking to maximize their system investment." Linux NetworX has already captured attention with its award-winning supercluster Evolocity®, a complete turnkey cluster solution based on the AMD Athlon processor. The entire line of Evolocity clusters includes both unique hardware and Linux NetworX cluster management software called ClusterWorX®. The Evolocity 4500 received a Best of Show Award for Network Servers & Peripherals at NetWorld+Interop 2000 Atlanta. The win reflects the growing number of organizations that are employing AMD Athlon processor-based systems for their enterprise computational needs. The award-winning AMD Athlon processor is already employed in several supercomputers used for scientific research in both the academic and private sectors, including systems used in universities such as the University of Delaware, the University of Kentucky and the University of Utah, and in companies such as GeoCenter and MSC.Software. About the AMD Athlon Processor The AMD Athlon processor is an x86-compatible, seventh-generation design featuring a superpipelined, nine-issue superscalar microarchitecture optimized for high clock frequency; the industry's first fully pipelined, superscalar floating point unit for x86 platforms; high-performance cache architecture, now featuring 256KB of on-chip level (L2) cache and 128KB of on-chip level (L1) cache; enhanced 3DNow!™ technology with 24 additional instructions designed to improve integer math calculations, data movement for Internet streaming, and DSP communications; and a 200MHz system interface based on the Alpha™ EV6 bus protocol with support for scalable multiprocessing. AMD Athlon processors are manufactured using AMD's aluminum 0.18-micron process technology in Fab 25 in Austin, Texas and AMD's 0.18 micron copper technology in Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany.
