ECRIX AND KNOX SOFTWARE ANNOUNCE TURNKEY SERVER AND STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR INTERNET PROVIDERS Out-of-Box Server Appliance and Backup Solutions Meet Wide Range of Market Needs Boulder, CO March 12, 2001 Tape storage innovators, Ecrix Corp. and Knox Software, unveiled a reseller program under which the companies, in collaboration with the Sun Cobalt™ server appliance business unit of Sun Microsystems, Inc. (“Sun”), provide complete turnkey storage backup solutions in concert with Sun Cobalt’s RaQ™ 4i and Qube™ 3 server appliance sales. With these solutions, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can offer increased data security, adding value to their product offerings. The reseller program offers an incentive through the use of manufacturer rebates; making the total solution cost less than if the various components are purchased separately. The rebates are available to resellers for products purchased through distribution or direct from the manufacturers. Sun is offering the corresponding promotion to Sun Cobalt reseller partners through their web site (www.cobalt.com). As a result, resellers get turnkey hardware and software solutions whose interoperability is directly supported by the manufacturers. These solutions make the deployment of applications, layered services and data backup over the Web quick, easy and profitable. More importantly, a web browser-based user interface simplifies administration and enables out-ofbox installations in 30 minutes or less. “We’ve targeted the bundles at Solution Providers who are buying Sun thin servers and need between 30 gigabytes and a terabyte of storage security,” states Kelly Beavers, president of Ecrix Corporation. “These bundles fill the need for complete, systematically tested server and storage solutions at the lowest price point for this market.” This program is part of a push by Ecrix and Knox to increase their solutions provider business. Ecrix expects this market to explode due to the phenomenal growth worldwide in Internet Service Provider business. Late last year, NEC Research reported that the 2.7 billion Web pages were growing at a rate of five million pages per day and domain names, according to Network Solutions, by 368,000 names per week. The following bundles are currently ready for client support in Windows 95/98/2000 and NT, Linux, BSDI (3.0, 4.0) and FreeBSD environments: · The first bundled solution, featuring the Arkeia Backup & Recovery Software with the Sun Cobalt RaQ 4i server appliance and VXA RakPak (66/132 GB), offers significant space benefits for rack-mounted web hosting and email server applications by occupying only 2U of rack space. · An enterprise bundle is targeted at larger ISPs and corporate users and takes advantage of the Sun Cobalt RaQ 4i server appliance, the VXA AutoPak library (445/990 GB) and the Arkeia software for libraries. · The desktop bundle, featuring the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 server appliance and an external VXA-1 tape drive (33/66 GB), functions exceptionally well in applications such as a back office server in retail operations where it provides centralized storage and backup for all point-of-purchase operations. “The speed and reliability far exceeded our expectations. Our engineering team selected the Ecrix VXA RakPak and Knox Arkeia software combination as the exclusive tape backup and restoration solution for our rackunit.com customers,” states Dell Wolfensparger, the vice-president of marketing and business development for Dynamic Concepts, a Calif.-based ISP. Dynamic Concepts uses the Sun Cobalt server appliance to provide its customers with affordable co-location or dedicated server-hosting plans under the brand name, rackunit.com. “Knox, Ecrix and Sun Cobalt server appliances have been affiliated independently as long as their products have been available because the products naturally compliment each other,” adds Randy Thorburn, vice president of sales for Knox Software. “This well-matched bundle is a great value for anyone needing an out-of-the-box multiple server appliance configuration.” Availability All desktop, rack-mount and enterprise bundles are immediately available through selected resellers and over the web through Ecrix (www.VXA.com). The Sun servers are available through resellers and over the web through Sun’s server appliance business unit (www.cobalt.com).
