Lineo, a leading innovator in embedded systems, real-time and high availability solutions, is pleased to inform you of the following two technical bulletins. First, Lineo recently completed porting uClinux to the Motorola ColdFire MCF5272 processor. Second, Lineo has extended the SecureEdge VPN Router with the addition of RADIUS and TACACS+. LINEO PORTS UCLINUX TO MOTOROLA COLDFIRE MCF5272 Lineo recently completed porting uClinux™ (http://uclinux.lineo.com) to the Motorola ColdFire MCF5272 processor. Lineo has worked closely with Motorola on each of the new ColdFire processors to ensure that uClinux is available as the first Motorola development boards hit the streets. Lineo also works closely with OEM partners to facilitate access to all new uClinux processor architecture ports first, well before other companies would normally have access through the open source process. uClinux is already the world's leading free Linux distribution for embedded development on MMU-less systems. Almost the entire Motorola ColdFire range of microprocessors (including 5206e, 5307, and the powerful 5407) are now supported by uClinux, which ships as standard with many of Motorola's Development Boards, making uClinux a one-stop solution for anyone looking to develop on the ColdFire families. Internet appliance developers may download for free the entire uClinux suite of tools, including sample binaries, making uClinux the ideal "roll your own" commercial-grade embedded Linux operating system. Linux now provides everything from development to deployment using open standards without OEMs needing to spend "blood money" on proprietary and outdated operating systems traditionally available. Developers are able to bring up a full system with network support, development environment, and sophisticat ed applications in about the time it takes to plug the power cable in (boot time is approximately 1 second). Most Linux applications, and there are many, run with little or no modification under uClinux. This particular port is based upon the new Linux 2.4 kernel and is not a branch but rather a direct derivation of the mainstream Linux. uClinux is a good choice for any developer because of an impressive array of processor ports (see http://www.uclinux.org/ports) in conjunction with having hard real-time extensions, extensive tool chains, and widespread industry acceptance . Adding value to the uClinux choice, Lineo also provides additional assistance with development services, hardware design, reference designs, and even complete manufacturing and warehousing options. This port extends the Lineo SecureEdge VPN Router Platform into a new space of low-cost Internet appliances for Lineo's OEM partners (look for product announcements at the April ESC). The power of the 5272 processor coupled with numerous integrated functions (such as on-board Ethernet and USB drivers) means that the price-point for OEMs has dropped while maintaining all of the features and power that reside in the SecureEdge VPN Router family. The physical footprint of a SecureEdge VPN Router motherboar d has nearly halved in the 5272 boards, which Motorola will be showcasing in upcoming tradeshows. This means that Internet appliances are limited more by the physical connector space and casing requirements than by the underlying PCB. Lineo's extensive experience in working with global OEMs for price-point sensitive applications coupled with powerful, secure turnkey solutions make Lineo the first choice for any company looking to develop custom hardware systems. More recently, Lineo has had design wins in vertical arenas based upon content (MP3, anti-virus, anti-SPAM etc) and storage (micro-NAS and caching). More information on the Lineo SecureEdge VPN Router Platform may be found at http://www.lineo.com/products/secureedge/ LINEO EXTENDS SECUREEDGE VPN ROUTER Lineo has extended the SecureEdge VPN Router, a platform for OEMs to rapidly produce powerful and secure Internet appliances, with the addition of RADIUS and TACACS+. All of the ColdFire Family and x86 variants of the SecureEdge, using the popular uClinux operating system, now support the RADIUS and TACACS+ protocols. These are the two most widely used protocols, particularly by ISPs, for providing centralized AAA (authentication, authorization, and accounting). Adding this support involved creating two plug-ins for pppd; thus, anything using pppd can use RADIUS and TACACS+ such as Lineo's PoPToP PPTP and PPP dial-in. Code size increases were minimal (all sizes in bytes): ColdFire: x86 base pppd: 146204 134040 with TACACS+: 156880 (+10676) 145332 (+11292) with RADIUS: 155616 (+9408) 142588 (+8548) with both: 165232 (+19028) 153656 (+19616) The SecureEdge VPN Routers are available in a mix of models that include multiple 10/100 Ethernet ports, serial ports, inboard modems, ADSL, ISDN, and other broadband connectivity. Lineo has been increasingly asked for wireless support for 802.11b, Bluetooth and other protocols. This incredible range of connectivity options, coupled with a hardened firewall and industry standard VPN technology, make the platform extremely versatile. OEM partners have deployed the units as combinations of access servers, intelligent content filters, conventional routers, corporate edge security solutions, branch office relays, and even as music players! It was a logical extension to add the authentication, authorization and accounting functionality as many customers are ultimately ISPs and their end-users are looking for products that do a little more than just route packets and find the integration options attractive. AAA-authentication, authorization, and accounting, are the backbone of modern
