From: jrzadzki@tsicomm.com To: johnr@tsicomm.com Subject: NEWS: IBM ads LINUX to its iSeries servers Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 11:10:16 -0400 IBM today marks a key milestone in its campaign to drive Linux further into the enterprise, with its announcement that eServer iSeries models 270, 830, and 840, have become Linux enabled. This announcement completes IBM's Linux server enablement. Now, Linux runs across all IBM platforms from xSeries serves handling simple Web serving functions, on up to powerful zSeries servers, running complex databases for some the world's largest corporations. Today's announcement makes Linux servers available to the mid-size and small business market. Linux support on IBM eServer iSeries, allows mid-size customers to benefit from iSeries' robust reliability, scalability and security features, while integrating their core business applications with Linux. A single iSeries server can support up to 31 separate Linux partitions. Each Linux partition can share processors, disk, tape, LAN and other resources with other applications running on the iSeries server. Initially, Linux distributions from Red Hat and SuSe will be deployed on the new iSeries models. IBM is building its technology lead by supporting Linux. Last Friday, IBM announced project eLiza an effort to develop a self managing, intelligent computer network, able to administer itself with ever fewer maintenance technicians. Linux systems will play a key role in IBM's ability to deliver such self healing systems to market. IBM began its commitment to Linux more than two years ago. Since than it invested heavily in Linux -- creating the Linux Technology Center within IBM, to manage the company's Linux initiatives, partnering with Intel to create the Open Source Development Lab in Beaverton, Oregon, and this year alone investing more than $1 billion in its Linux programs. ------ IBM eServer Drives Down Costs, Improves Manageability for Mid-Market Customers Powerful servers remove complexity, reduce IT costs by estimated 25 percent ARMONK, N.Y., April 30, 2001 ... IBM today announced powerful new server consolidation solutions designed to help mid-sized customers manage infrastructure complexity and reduce the costs of running an e-business by an estimated 20 to 25 percent. These innovative enterprise server management solutions come with new IBM eServer iSeries models capable of helping even the smallest e-business manage risk and costs, while continuing to invest in strategic, Net-related initiatives. The new solutions are aimed squarely at ?Wintel? customers overwhelmed by the high cost and complexity of managing large Windows server farms. ?Using IBM logical partitioning and 24-by-7 availability via Lakeview Technology?s Mimix software, we were able to consolidate four servers onto one IBM eServer i840. We saved over $600,000 in less than a year,? said Nancy Shepherd, senior project manager, Insurance Management Solutions Group. ?We will complete our consolidation plan this year by installing 10 to 15 directly attached xSeries servers with IBM?s Integrated xSeries Adapter technology. We expect even greater savings and dramatic improvement in day-to-day management and disaster recovery of our Windows servers.? IBM iSeries servers are loaded with some of IBM?s most innovative scientific discoveries: new PowerPC copper and silicon-on-insulator microprocessors, dynamic logical partitioning, remote wireless management technology, IBM Unix in a run-time environment, Linux in a partition, and a high-speed adapter that connects an IBM xSeries server to an iSeries server capable of managing a Windows server network while operating like a storage area network. ?During periods of economic uncertainty, businesses often look for ways to manage costs and complexity in their operations,? said Judith Hurwitz, chairman and chief strategy officer, Hurwitz Group. ?Integrated, cost-effective, easy-to-manage solutions could be exactly what customers need to survive and stay competitive, while continuing to build their e-infrastructures.? IBM?s new eServer models include the i270, i820 and i840. The i840, the flagship of the iSeries line, delivers SPECjbb2000 Java performance that is 20 percent better than comparable Sun Fire ?midframe? servers from Sun Microsystems. Running native Lotus Domino, the i840 outpaces all servers, shattering its own world record for Domino scalability. The new server handled 100,500 concurrent NotesBench R5 Mail Users on single server, with an average response time of 1/16th of a second -- twice as fast as the nearest competitor with nearly 12 times the number of concurrent users. ?We?re delivering solutions today that our competitors dream about -- simple, integrated, self- managing software, services and servers they need to manage their growing e-infrastructures,? said Buell Duncan, general manager, Mid-Market Servers, IBM Server Group. ?IBM has the industry?s premier integrated business server for the mid-market. As ISVs flock to us, even Sun Microsystems is smart enough to know that IBM put the real ?mid? in ?midframe? computing.? IBM also announced new software to help iSeries customers manage the output of e-business from creation to distribution. Focused on complete e-output solutions and enterprise-wide print management, the new offerings include Infoprint Server for iSeries, Infoprint Designer for iSeries and significant new function in OS/400 and Print Services Facility/400 (PSF/400). General availability of the new iSeries models and OS/400 Version 5 Release 1 is expected by May 25, 2001. Pricing starts at $11,200. # # # IBM is the number one server company in the world. IBM today announced powerful new server consolidation solutions designed to help mid-sized customers manage infrastructure complexity and reduce the costs of running an e-business by an estimated 20 to 25 percent. Along with OS/400 Version 5 Release 1, the most feature-rich version of the iSeries operating system ever, new IBM eServer iSeries solutions announced today include: Innovative Technology that Delivers New Levels of Simplicity ? New PowerPC microprocessors that exploit IBM?s second-generation copper and silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technologies, giving customers industry-leading performance across a variety of workloads. ? The Integrated xSeries Adapter, which allows growing mid-sized businesses to directly attach up to 16 one- two- or four-processor IBM xSeries servers to a single iSeries system, significantly simplifying the manageability of Windows servers, storage and edge-of-network appliance servers. Storage for the xSeries servers is consolidated in and managed by iSeries, allowing iSeries to function as a storage area network, reducing storage costs and enhancing performance. ? The IBM Integrated xSeries Server, an 850MHz Intel-based PC server card that fits inside an iSeries server, giving small businesses that want to grow fast a cost-effective, easy-to-manage alternative to Windows server farms, without adding staff. Customers can consolidate up to 32 individual Windows servers inside a single iSeries server. ? New Fibre Channel disk and tape adapters, increasing the storage options for iSeries customers by allowing them to participate in Storage Area Network (SAN) environments. ?
