May 16, 2001 - MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced that STMicroelectronics has designated MontaVista, provider of Hard Hat Linux® for embedded applications, as the first and preferred supplier of Linux for its system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions for consumer electronics and other markets. MontaVista and STMicroelectronics will launch their alliance by collaborating on the development of Hard Hat Linux for ST40-based digital consumer platforms. The ST40 is a family of SoC products based on the SuperH, 32-bit SH-4 core. The two companies are providing mutual early access to each other¹s internal development work. Moreover, MontaVista will offer Hard Hat Linux technical training and support to STMicroelectronics¹ customers. MontaVista will collaborate with STMicroelectronics to ensure that application stacks for Digital TV integrate seamlessly with current and future releases of Hard Hat Linux. MontaVista will also pursue joint sales and marketing activities with STMicroelectronics. ³ST sees an increasing demand for Linux for consumer applications, so we are delighted that MontaVista will be offering their embedded Linux products and services for our advanced consumer reference platforms², said Jean-Yves Larignon, general manager of ST¹s Micro Core and Development Tools Division. MontaVista Hard Hat Linux is already the preferred embedded platform for more than 125 designs in communications infrastructure and consumer products, including central office equipment, Internet appliances and set-top box designs. "Consumer electronics companies and developers of other embedded computing applications are increasingly looking to Linux as the shortest path to market," affirmed Sheila Baker, vice president marketing, at MontaVista Software. ³STMicroelectronics¹ choice of Linux and of MontaVista is a validation both of our vision and of our business model.² Availability Hard Hat Linux 2.0 Professional Edition is available direct from MontaVista and MontaVista distribution channels worldwide as a product subscription, providing the MontaVista Hard Hat Linux kernel, utilities, development tools and one year of technical support. It is open source, royalty-free, and built from 100% pure Linux sources. Also available for Hard Hat Linux 2.0 Professional Edition are expanded add-on capabilities, including packages for embedded Java, High-Availability, legacy RTOS porting and emulation, and embedded GUI development. MontaVista will also make available Hard Hat Linux 2.0 Journeyman Edition freely available for technical evaluation and other uses. A subset of Hard Hat Linux Professional Edition, it targets a sampling from all Hard Hat Linux CPU architectures and hosts on Red Hat Linux. It can be downloaded from MontaVista¹s Web site or obtained on CD-ROM for a nominal charge. Hard Hat Linux 2.0 Professional Edition will be available in May 2001, and will be joined by additional functionality and add-on technologies via on-line distribution and on CD-ROM.
