In GNOME, drag a box round the offending icons with the left button,
then right click on one of them and select "Delete". Log out, and select
the "Save desktop state" box (or whatever it's called), and your icons
will be gone forever.

It's the first thing I do if I'm lumbered with a GNOME system. Like you,
I feel both GNOME and KDE are missing the point somewhat, and they can
take my fvwm configuration away when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.
I've yet to find anything else that lets me manage my desktop as efficiently.
