Subject: [rl-announce] build 34!
Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 23:25:48 -0700 (PDT)

hi all,

thanks for being patient while i look for a job and work on RL at the same
time. build 34 is out, and the update tool is functional! i just have
the console version now, the gui version will be coming later. but if you
want to update to build 34 from a previous version, do this:

- snag the rlgpgkeys, rlupdate-console, and gnupg RPM's from the ftp site
- as root "rlupdate" in a command prompt window.

*** please test this! it works for me but... ***

build 34 has some cool things such as:

- newer kernel, kde2
- webcam support
- kpackage
- the initial version of nethood
- the initial version of rlupdate
- bug fixes, etc.

these things don't work:

- creating a printer while installing doesn't work. wait till after
install finishes.
- the kde splashscreen is in the upper left-hand corner
- fonts are too big on high screen resolutions
- rescue disc in control panel doesn't work
- usb hotplug doesn't autoload modules
- nethood only browses your current windows domain
- nethood requires samba to be configured and started by hand
- korganizer's first day of the week is on monday, not sunday
- konqueror doesn't correctly display fonts in <pre> tags
- ssh is started by default [should be off by default]
- cd autorun only works for the second cd drive in a two-cd system
- konqueror has the tendency to crash while browsing the local filesystem

and i'm sure there are plenty more.

these things need testing:

- webcam support. if you have a USB webcam, plug it in and see if it
shows up in My Linux System. it should. see if the proper video4linux
driver loads automatically. it probably won't [bug]. click on the webcam
picture and see if you can see the video from it. this works on my
logitech quickcam express using mod_quickcam.o if i load the driver by
hand using modprobe.

- update testing. grab and install the gnupg, rlgpgkeys, and
rlupdate-console RPMs from the ftp site and execute "rlupdate" as root.
it should install everything that has been updated since whatever build
you have installed. it's not too smart, it doesn't handle dependencies or
conflicts well [for instance the cups stuff in bld 34 conflicts with the
LPRng in earlier builds - these will probably have to be resolved by
hand]. as soon as this is stable i'll move on the the gui version.

update doesn't yet work for extras like devtools and such.

- nethood support. you can browse machines and shares on your local
windows domain but not other domains yet. tell me, does it work? you
need to first configure the client [right click on Local Area Network and
choose Configure Network Access] and also samba [edit the workgroup= line
in /etc/samba.d/smb.conf to your workgroup, change CONFIGURED and ONBOOT
to "yes" in /etc/sysconfig/daemons/samba] and then /etc/rc.d/init.d/samba
start. then click on Local Area Network. Can you see your computer and
all others in your workrgoup?

also please test cups printing. it's a lot different than LPRng, our old
printing system. it's a lot better i think, but i need to know that it
works well. does it?

i know it's a pain to test these by hand, but i need to make sure they
work before i make them easy. please try all three of these, if you can,
and let me know.

thanks!

joe
