Subject: Dr. Dobb's Tcl-URL! - weekly Tcl news and links (Jun 4)
Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 08:05:56 -0500 (CDT)

This was a slow week, since it contained Memorial Day, Pentecost, and
Shevuot. Many people were traveling rather than Tcl'ing.

QOTW: Bob Techentin: Come to think of it, put a CD with the latest
Tcl/Tk, ActiveTcl, TclPro, and extensions in your back pocket, and
take it to your new job. You might be surprised how quickly it could
come in handy.

Also noteworthy, from the director of the Tcl Consortium: "The
lawyers can make rules, but these guys (open source programmers) will
find a way to get around them. . . . [C]orporate intelligence is
slightly lower than the dumbest member of the board of directors of
that corporation. The uppermost echelons of large corporate entities
really do deep down to be controlling and monopolistic. They
recognize that ... much of what they want is illegal ... but that
doesn't stop them from trying ..."

Extensive discussions this week on making Tcl work better with 64-bit
integers. Alas, Google disconnected the thread:

David Gravereaux posts a sample bit of code that lets an extension
compile under 8.0 or later releases without needing changes to the
    source code.

Marty Backe shows how to find the directory in which the main script
lives, even when the script was launched from a symbolic link:

The Tcl Developers' Exchange (variously named dev.scriptics.com,
    dev.ajubasolutions.com, tcl.activestate.com) gets a PURL:

are more consistently up-to-date. A fourth possibility is
