Linuxfest has traditionally celebrated Linux, the alternative operating system. Linuxfest this year will offer entertainment, food and Linux related demonstrations which include Satellite Internet and the new Mandrake OS, as well as servers, KDE, Gnome, Afterstep, Quick Cams and audio recording. There will be space to sell and swap and some great door prizes. This year's Linuxfest will be held on Grayson Street in Galax; and will be the first street fest in the history of the event. Starr Hopkins, LSNet webmistress and coordinator of the very first LSNet Linuxfest feels confident that this Linuxfest will stand apart. "This event is not as high tech as Linux-Expo but we always have a lot of fun. Rock music and computing go together as well as cheese and wine or AMD and Linux." This year's entertainment will include a mix of bluegrass, blues, rock and alternative music and a Middle Eastern (belly) dancer. Cryptameria (cryptameria.com) will be performing last, as is traditional at all the LSNet Linuxfests. The first Linuxfest was held on May 3, 1999 at the home of Jim and Barbara Tarvid, the owners of LSNet. That event boasted attendees from as far away as West Virginia, Washington DC and Atlanta, Georgia. The Roanoke Times compared the event to Stompin' '76, a comparison that bolstered attendance for the next two years. This event is free and open to the public. Attendees may register at the event's website at www.gnu-linuxfest.com. # # # ---------------------------------------------
