From: Annette Oevermann <aoevermann@pacifico.com> To: <lwn@lwn.net> Subject: MontaVista Releases Library Optimizer Tool Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 11:35:59 -0700 MontaVista Releases Library Optimizer Tool for Hard Hat Linux 2.0 into Open Source Furthers company's pioneering open source and embedded efforts Sunnyvale, Calif., August 27, 2001 MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced the submission of its Hard Hat Linux 2.0 Library Optimizer Tool to the open source community. MontaVista is releasing its Library Optimizer Tool code as a project on SourceForge (http://www.sourceforge.com) with two goals in mind to encourage wide adoption of the base software and to promote the expansion of tools for embedded Linux development. MontaVista's Library Optimizer Tool (LOT) parses and inventories the program libraries and symbols required by a particular project and prunes unneeded library code and symbols, yielding smaller, more efficient deployment images. "By placing this technology into open source, we invite our open software peers to join forces with us to improve both the number and the quality of tools for embedded Linux development," said Mark Orvek, director of research and development, MontaVista Software. "Opening this project on SourceForge is a call to action for embedded Linux toolmakers to bring improved technology rapidly into the marketplace." In keeping with MontaVista and open source practices, all pertinent MontaVista work is being submitted back to the relevant source trees, promoting the LOT architecture and specification for the entire community. Hard Hat Linux® 2.0 Professional Edition features a comprehensive suite of development tools designed to streamline development, debugging and deployment of embedded applications. Hard Hat Linux 2.0 boasts new system scaling and configuration tools, performance analysis, source-level debugging capabilities, and other utilities to speed embedded applications to market. MontaVista has also expanded support for a variety of open source tools retargeted for embedded cross development. These cross tools include versions of the Linux Trace Tool (kernel performance and execution analyzer); cbrowser, cflow, cprof, and cscope (C code analysis tools); and DDD (a graphical debugger interface). Additionally, Hard Hat Linux 2.0 continues to leverage the ubiquitous open source GNU tools, including the gcc/g++ family of compilers, assemblers and cross versions of the GDB source-level debugger for kernel and application debugging. HHL 2.0 also features support for hardware-based source-level debug of the Linux kernel and device drivers with in-circuit emulation and run-control devices such as Abatron¹s BDM and JTAG tools. The Library Optimizer Tool and other tools in the Hard Hat Linux 2.0 Professional Edition operate on a wide array of development platforms, including Red Hat Linux, Yellow Dog Linux, Suse, Mandrake, TurboLinux, Solaris, under VMWare on Windows, and natively on Hard Hat Linux for x86. Hard Hat Linux tools also target the broadest array of CPU architectures and board and system-level platforms of any embedded Linux development solution including, PowerPC, IA-32/x86, MIPS, StrongARM and SH. Availability Interested parties can examine and download the Library Optimization Tool project code from http://libraryopt.sourceforge.net/ after Sept 15, 2001. The Library Optimizer Tool is available directly from MontaVista to subscribers of the Hard Hat Linux 2.0 Professional Edition. About MontaVista Software Inc.
