Subject: [OpenNMS-Announce] OpenNMS Update
Date:	 Fri, 24 Aug 2001 09:22:30 -0000

Lest ye think that this is a full-blown Update, it's not. Just wanted to
keep everyone abreast of recent development(s).

New Stuff
=========

Plenty to report here, but instead, here's the 50,000 foot view:

 * The code base we're working on internally has replaced JSDT with OpenJMS.
We're seeing improvements on resource utilization, better scalability, and
reliability is drastically improved.
 * We have fixes in place that address ICMPD's untimely demise, including a
re-architecture of that subsystem leveraging JNI.
 * We've given in to the idea that SCM, while beautiful in concept, was too
big a resource hog to justify its existence. It is actively being replaced
and that process should be complete over the next couple of weeks.
 * Signficant functionality added to the Web UI.

Current status has just about all underlying components converted to work in
this new model, with some work still remaining. Enough that I can't safely
give you a date for the next significant release. We've also taken the
opportunity that while we are amidst massive re-writes, to also shift things
around in CVS (big pain) and update the doc (bigger pain). We have an
updated draft of an installation guide that will be posted to this list
later today.

Upcoming Road Shows
===================

We are going to have a booth at LinuxWorldExpo in San Francisco, CA next
week. Ben & I will be there demo-ing the latest fully-functional version of
OpenNMS, and with any luck, bumming someone else's network connection to
show you how it works.

You'll be able to see the code running, ask us technical question, and maybe
even win a few tosses at the OpenNMS Dunk Tank (or is that Drunk Tank?).
We'll have goofy trade show crap to give away (thanks Luke!) and will
otherwise be enjoying the company of random cool people and late summer in
the Bay area.

==============
Oh, yeah.  BTW
==============

We're hoping to be back on track with regular releases, regular updates, and
a commercial offering over the next couple of months. Stay tuned, keep
trying out the code, tell us what you'd like to see, submit new
features/patches, and always remember to keep ridin' the storm out.

Later,

Shane O.
